12841502, Jazmine Sullivan's 'Mascara' appreciation.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-29-15 02:16 PM
have you heard it?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed2nSh7QraY

i heard it for the 2nd time this weekend and i fell in strong like w/it.

here go the lyrics:

"Mascara"

Yeah my hair, and my ass fake, but so what!
I get my rent payed with it, and my tits get me trips to places I can't pronounce right
He said he'd keep it coming, if I keep my body tight

And them bitches stay mad 'cause I'm living the life
‘Cause I'm living the life, oh
Most people think I'm shallow
‘Cause I'm always dressed like I'm going out to the club,
But I gotta keep up 'cause there's new chicks poppin' up every day
And they want the same things

So I never leave the house without make-up on,
I keep mascara in my pocket if I'm running to the market
‘Cause you never know who's watching you
So I got to stay on, I got to stay on
I got to stay on, I got to stay on
Said I got to stay on!

No, I ain't got a job but, so what!
I don't need it when I'm getting everything that I want, and everything that I ask for
I wear that freakum dress for daddy then he give me more

And them bitches stay mad 'cause they working so hard
While I'm working so smart, oh
It's a small price to pay when you're
living this good and he keep me in the hills,
and he kept me out the hood
‘Cause there's new chicks poppin' up
every day and they want the same things

So I never leave the house without make-up on,
I keep mascara in my pocket if I'm running to the market
‘Cause you never know who's watching you
So I got to stay on, I got to stay on
I got to stay on, I got to stay on
Said I got to stay on!

Now, I know why you're looking at me like that
It ain't attractive when you're looking at me like that,
Girl, don't be mad 'cause while you're
cooking dinner for your broke nigga
You could be in the gym working
on your figure like me. So...

Don't I deserve to be privileged?
Don't I deserve to get the very best?
‘Cause it ain't easy being this fine all the time,
‘Cause if it was, then we all could do it
But we can't now no
So bitch don't kill my vibe, don't be
mad cause you coach class and I'm in that G5.
Beautiful girls run the whole world,
So I got to stay on!

So I never leave the house without make-up on,
I keep mascara in my pocket if I'm running to the market
‘Cause you never know who's watching you
So I got to stay on, I got to stay on
I got to stay on, I got to stay on
Said I got to stay on!

Oh...
Yeah, she drive the dope boys crazy
She knows, that all them hoes so jealous
'Cause that ass, will make a man leave home, uh
That's why she keeps her mascara on.
12841516, was great til it came on with the kids in the car

12841519, what was the problem?
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-29-15 02:30 PM
12841728, Really like those lyrics.
Posted by spades, Mon Jun-29-15 05:24 PM
12841750, Me too
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-29-15 05:37 PM
I was struck when I paid attention. And I understood some of the women in my life a bit better.
12841752, real talk, it's changed my opinion on one woman in particular.
Posted by spades, Mon Jun-29-15 05:39 PM
12841754, I love that song
Posted by Starbaby Jones, Mon Jun-29-15 05:40 PM
and I love how sincerely she delivered the lyrics. No judgement, just a glimpse into that frame of thought. Her songwriting on that album, as a whole, was pretty strong.
12841756, Agreed
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-29-15 05:41 PM
12841762, It's not only the lack of judgement, but the REALNESS of it.
Posted by spades, Mon Jun-29-15 05:46 PM
I really appreciate it.
12841789, Definitely, like, she jumped into that line of thinking
Posted by Starbaby Jones, Mon Jun-29-15 06:08 PM
and presented an understandable rationale for what the chicks who live like that move the way they do. Humanizing is the best way I can describe it.
12841784, Indeed.
Posted by soulpsychodelicyde, Mon Jun-29-15 06:05 PM
I ride for the whole album.
12841809, Slept on album, bright start in the darkness
Posted by Scarface_7, Mon Jun-29-15 06:24 PM
that is r and b
12841848, Brand New is excellent too.
Posted by lightworks, Mon Jun-29-15 07:06 PM
12841860, pure shite. can't even believe y'all up in here rockin' w/ it too.
Posted by Somnus, Mon Jun-29-15 07:26 PM
and i'll save you snarksters the trouble, here:

"^^^ broke nigga"

there you go.
12842009, care to expound, or should we take
Posted by Scarface_7, Tue Jun-30-15 07:33 AM
your little assed opinion? Shitty? Seems like it went over your head, player
12842419, are you talking about the artistry or the message?
Posted by spades, Tue Jun-30-15 01:14 PM
12841885, i had to play it twice to make sure that i heard it right
Posted by ALmighty44, Mon Jun-29-15 09:09 PM
i bought the cd because of "let it burn" but that whole cd is dope as hell. i really like #HoodLove though
12842020, R&B album of the year. She should be getting more attention.
Posted by daryloneal, Tue Jun-30-15 08:09 AM
12842112, why do you think she doesnt? the album is great
Posted by MzOnyxVI, Tue Jun-30-15 09:48 AM
12842476, because she isn't white. If Adele made the same record it would do 10x
Posted by daryloneal, Tue Jun-30-15 01:53 PM
the numbers.

Jazmine doesn't have much of an image, and considering today's climate especially, the marketing just isn't there.

She's doing okay for herself. She just deserves more.

And it angers me.

Jazmine wrote the Love & Hip Hop Soundtrack... I love it

that and Hood Love

12842151, LOL @ the LHH soundtrack.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jun-30-15 10:19 AM
but yes.
12842097, i kept waiting for the moral of the story--
Posted by bloocollar, Tue Jun-30-15 09:34 AM
the teachable moment, if you will

but this just seems like the celebration of hoe'ing
12842164, thank you, Bloo. I was gonna respond to #15 but you summed it--
Posted by Somnus, Tue Jun-30-15 10:29 AM
up pretty nicely.
12842168, im just trying to understand--
Posted by bloocollar, Tue Jun-30-15 10:32 AM
is it ok to call a chick that behaves like that a hoe?

if not, why?
12842171, i don't think you're trying to understand
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jun-30-15 10:33 AM
and i'm not interested in helping you.
12842174, RE: i don't think you're trying to understand
Posted by bloocollar, Tue Jun-30-15 10:36 AM
>and i'm not interested in helping you.

then why'd you reply to me?
12842175, to say what i said.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jun-30-15 10:36 AM
12842313, lol

Posted by spades, Tue Jun-30-15 01:11 PM
Is it ok to call a man who behaves like (insert stereotype) a nigga?

if not - why not?

You might want to look into WHY you want/need to call her one.
12842443, RE: im just trying to understand--
Posted by bloocollar, Tue Jun-30-15 01:33 PM
>Is it ok to call a man who behaves like (insert stereotype) a
>nigga?

sure

or thug, goon.... or even ruffian if you're feeling aristocratic
12842469, well at least you're intellectually consistent.
Posted by spades, Tue Jun-30-15 01:50 PM
I completely disagree, tho.
12842177, The point of the song, or really the album, wasn't morality.
Posted by Starbaby Jones, Tue Jun-30-15 10:38 AM
It was a snapshot of all these characters and their thought processes. Songs like Mascara, Brand New and #HoodLove are just her jumping into minds of these characters and expressing how they think. No more, no less.
12842179, ah ok--
Posted by bloocollar, Tue Jun-30-15 10:40 AM
she's a different character in each song?

thats kinda dope
12842221, Exactly!
Posted by Starbaby Jones, Tue Jun-30-15 11:17 AM
I think she said "Forever Don't Last" and "Masterpiece" were the most personal. The rest of the album was pretty much just her exploring different characters and writing from their perspectives. That, to me, is what's humanizing. I'll probably never agree with the character from Mascara, but the women who live like that are human and there is a thought process behind what they do. So, it's cool to hear that perspective expressed...to me, at least.
12842511, Word. Alotta song throughout history have done this.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Tue Jun-30-15 02:17 PM
Van Halen's "Runnin With The Devil" and Christopher Cross' "Ride Like The Wind" immediately came to mind.
Jimi's "Hey Joe" even.
12842491, Exactly. It's all about perspective. Not right or wrong.
Posted by daryloneal, Tue Jun-30-15 02:01 PM
12842417, Why does it NEED a moral?
Posted by spades, Tue Jun-30-15 01:12 PM
Also, a few of us in here learned some shit, therefore - the whole song is a teachable moment - you may not like what it's teaching, but that don't mean there ain't a lesson.
12842428, well cause i would hope young women--
Posted by bloocollar, Tue Jun-30-15 01:21 PM
would want to be more than that

being a hoe isnt something to aspire to

mainly because it depreciates the older a chick gets
12842473, some will, some won't.
Posted by spades, Tue Jun-30-15 01:52 PM
Also, Bartending doesn't particularly age well. Neither does waitressing, by and large, or police/fire/emt work.

Where's the outrage for those professions?
12842482, im not demeaning sex work--
Posted by bloocollar, Tue Jun-30-15 01:57 PM
especially when its an honest transaction

i wouldnt want any one in my family to do it but i recognize thats the influence of society's values

the chick described in the song though wouldn't classify herself as a hoe

chicks like that are first and foremost delusional

12842496, Ugh. Shut up.
Posted by soulpsychodelicyde, Tue Jun-30-15 02:06 PM
Just...ugh.
12842601, Again, WHY is it so important she call herself a hoe?
Posted by spades, Tue Jun-30-15 03:41 PM
12842610, b/c women like the protagonist in this song must be dehumanized.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jun-30-15 03:52 PM
it's bothersome that the songwriter explores this woman's world and the woman's perspective on it w/o judgment b/c tramps like this must be kept in their place or else other women or young girls might not get the message that this woman is a hoe and not human. it doesn't matter that the song doesn't encourage anyone to join this woman nor does it praise this woman it merely presents her and her viewpoint w/o judgment - hoes MUST BE derided at every opportunity. if we can't cast stones at hoes then the world might fall apart.
12842620, ah man, the jig is up!
Posted by spades, Tue Jun-30-15 04:03 PM
Damn, SoWhat!
12842512, Reply #43. Do you feel like this about those songs?
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Tue Jun-30-15 02:20 PM
Being a killer on the run isn't something to aspire to.
How about being a drug dealer, cap peeler, etc.?
8 Ball & MJG came out talkin about pimpin and pushing a woman's head into the wall "until I hear that crackin sound".
Was that something to aspire to?
Tyler and OF was rappin bout rape.
Why does Jazmine get the judgment tho?
12842515, of course none of those things--
Posted by bloocollar, Tue Jun-30-15 02:24 PM
should be aspired to

and she's being judged because this post was about her song
12842564, Ok, just don't remember you in posts about such songs.
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Tue Jun-30-15 03:08 PM
Never really known you to have a problem with male whoring either.
Gonna be interesting to see in the future.

12842578, really strong song off a really nice album
Posted by Calico, Tue Jun-30-15 03:19 PM
...i like how she went IN on each song....i had "Mascara" on repeat for awhile though....
12842588, great song, unfortunately for me I seriously played it out when it dropped
Posted by blkprinceMD05, Tue Jun-30-15 03:29 PM
Months ago. Like I listened to so much back then that I kinda skip it now. Great sounding song and like others said I like that she wasn't judgy with it ( at this Q and A I went to with her here she stated it was inspired by looking at certain women on Instagram and just thinking how much goes into the upkeep) and yes she killed/kills it live
