Eddie Murphy Performed Stand-Up Comedy Last Night For The First Time In 25 Years


Ho. Lee. Shit. Reports and rumors are currently circulating that Eddie Murphy broke 25 year absence and returned to stand-up comedy last night, performing a surprise set at The Comedy Store club in Los Angeles. Murphy took the stage during an evening lineup that also included Arsenio Hall. Hall couldn’t contain his excitement, and fired off a tweet praising Murphy for getting back out onto the boards.

Murphy has been easing slowly back into the comedy spotlight–the legendary funnyman briefly appeared in last month’s Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary special, and entertainment reporters have confirmed that Murphy will play Richard Pryor’s father in an upcoming biopic. Slate reports that there was a strict no-recording policy at The Comedy Store, but we’re still hoping that some sort of hard evidence surfaces. Consequence of Sound reports that Murphy delivered a brief 10-minute set, which would mark the longest time the comedian has performed stand-up since 1990. Until then keep a keen eye out for more developments in Eddie Murphy’s fits-and-starts return to stand-up. And, if you just can’t get enough Eddie right this second, revisit his hilarious (and groovy) video for “Temporary.”

B: i have speculated that one of the issues keeping Eddie from returning to stand up is the difficulty he may face finding places where he can work on his act w/o it being blasted all over the Internet. b/c even as gifted as he is (was?) @ stand up - he's going to bomb in the beginning. even the best stand ups have to work out their act and that means figuring out what works and what doesn't. the jokes that don't get work get cut. but all of the jokes have to be tried out first - even the awful ones. and even the good material - i assume he won't want it all over the Internet before he's even gotten started w/the comeback for real.

anyway, i hope this is true and that it means he's working on a return to stand up. and i hope he's able to keep this up - keep dropping in on various stages as part of the comeback.
