12701446, Steely Dan Appreciation Page
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sat Jan-17-15 01:37 AM
i have always dug those cats. love the way their brains are twisted sharp and witty. i don't have a big vocabulary however i always learn something new when i hear them.

very versatile act indeed.

what are your favorite songs or albums by them??
12701449, they are a cool act, not really my thing but i appreciate them

also donald fagen was a good friend of levon helm's. i saw him at one of the midnight rambles and talked to him for a bit. seemed like a genuine dude and obviously was a great addition to the band that night.
12701463, I made this steely dan compilation

I love Black Cow. Love that song. Royal scam is dope, too.

Just don't sample their music. They'll sue the shit out of you. They broke Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. Broke them niggas like Bane did to Batman.

That's only a segment of the overall documentary. The whole thing is right here and it's AMAZING. Not just for them but everyone that was in on this project are crazy talented and they pretty much know it...especially guys like Benard "YOU DONE IT! YOU DONE HIRED THE HITMAKER!" Purdie

12701485, my fav SD cut is prolly a tie between Peg & Rikki Don't Lose That Number

I didn't start getting into them until I first heard Donald Fagen's solo album "The Nightfly" (dope album BTW) back in the '80s.

I've seen them live, twice, once in '96 and again in '04.

i recently saw the dukes of september live on PBS. it's a yacht rock supergroup consisting of michael mcdonald, boz scaggs, and donald fagen doing various songs from their long careers. top notch viewing if you can find it. i was surprised at how good a guitarist boz scaggs is.
12701679, i had a loop of green earrings on a DAT back in early 90s.
Posted by poetx, Sat Jan-17-15 07:53 PM
that shit went hard.

i was always like, this gonna be that SHIT!!!!

love that song, but it was ill to rhyme over.

but i love all their stuff in its own original context.

de la freaked shit out of peg. and, again, that is fantastic song in its own right.

12701682, no particular order:
Posted by poetx, Sat Jan-17-15 08:03 PM
black cow - "youuuuu were high"

deacon blues - "make love to these women, languid and bittersweet" <-- first time i ever heard the word languid. their lyrics were always on some other shit, too.

babylon sisters -

fm -

I.G.Y. (what a beautiful world) - i know its technically just donald fagen, but same shit. same vibe. such a longing view of a future world far better than the mess we living in now.

peg - i'm gonna dig up the video on the making of that song, where michael mcdonald breaks down how them cats orchestrated his harmonies. that fathered so many ppl's styles.

hey nineteen - "moved down from scarsdale, where the hell am i?" - when i used to work in CT every other week and would be driving up from ny, i'd be singing that shit, on loop, every time i passed a sign for scarsdale.

when josie comes home -

12701768, Caves of Altamira !
Posted by neuro_OSX, Sun Jan-18-15 03:45 AM
Big fan of the "Steely Dan", the track "Caves of Altamira" always sets me in a good mood. Until I watched the documentary about their album "Aja" I had no idea how much the session players added to their sound. IMHO those session players were the icing on Steely Dan's cake, took them to that next level. Bernard Prudy's drumming on "Home at Last" is epic stuff !! Larry Carlton's solo on "Kid Charlemagne" is epic as well.

On a side note does anyone recall where the name "Steely Dan" came from? When I found out I cracked up.. lolz

Posted by adg87, Mon Jan-19-15 09:50 PM
I've known the lyrics to that album since I was a kid. My parents had the vinyl, and I'll never ever forget anything about it. Maybe the first album I knew every word to. Crazy thing is I've never heard fully any other Steely album except Two Against Nature.
