12697534, Complex's 50 Most Racist Movies
Posted by ThaAnthology, Tue Jan-13-15 04:16 PM
I was talking to someone about Soul Man and googled it. I found this link. Very Interesting.

http://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2012/05/the-50-most-racist-movies/soul-man#/soul-man
1. Birth of a Nation
2. Breakfast At Tiffany's
3. Planet of the Apes
4. Soul Man
5. The Passion
6. The Toy

(I personally think The Toy should be higher. I can't even watych that and Soul Man...)
12697541, Soul Man is not nearly as racist as its reputation
Posted by John Forte, Tue Jan-13-15 04:20 PM
your average 80s movie is more racist than Soul Man. People just can't get past the blackface.
12697547, SHIIIIIIIIIT! LOL
Posted by ThaAnthology, Tue Jan-13-15 04:23 PM
I saw that shit as a kid in the theaters bro.

1. White man steals black sholarship
2. Dates Black woman under rouse
3. Appropriates Stereotypes (Pimp, Black Guerilla, etc)
4. White Guilt Complex
5. Kuumbaya moments at the end
12697556, The only thing I find problematic is the Affirmative Action angle
Posted by John Forte, Tue Jan-13-15 04:25 PM
it's a film that addressed the way white America viewed black people. The whites were portrayed as bigoted and wrong.
12697561, I haven't seen it and won't based on the strength of this reply.
Posted by initiationofplato, Tue Jan-13-15 04:27 PM
Sounds awful.
12697563, it's not a good movie, by any stretch of the imagination
Posted by John Forte, Tue Jan-13-15 04:29 PM
but to call it racist sight unseen is lazy and perpetuates the "race card" myth. See it or not, but don;t call it racist without watching it.
12697576, I've seen it
Posted by ThaAnthology, Tue Jan-13-15 04:33 PM
I think it was also "white racist" so therefore it is a racist film. And it was wack .
12697580, It's very wack
Posted by John Forte, Tue Jan-13-15 04:35 PM
12697766, the basketball scene was funny as shit tho...
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jan-13-15 06:30 PM
12697627, it's racist, and wack, but was also an attempt at empathy
Posted by Mynoriti, Tue Jan-13-15 04:54 PM
it perpetuated a bunch of stereotypes but also tried to take the angle of "put yourself in someone else's shoes", while also trying to hold a mirror to white america

that's not to say it was deep, or that it doesn't suck, but I agree with John Forte that it was more well intended than flat out mockery we saw in so many 80s movies. Something like Long Duck Dong was there for the sole purpose of "lol look at the funny oriental".
12697578, aaaaaand im going to watch it tonight

I won't spoil the ape hierarchy thing, but they were reaching (maybe intentionally) with that one.

Posted by Atillah Moor, Tue Jan-13-15 04:57 PM
They address the race issue in the DVD commentary. Apparently the Asian American cast and crew was okay with it (which I guess doesn't say much) but if you factor in that the Sidekick is actually the lead character and that it's sort of a modern WuXia type of film I find it hard to see as racist.

Outside of the Joy Luck Club I can't even think of a movie with such a large Asian cast.
12697652, yeah, i mean its genre. it was a magic kung fu movie.
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Jan-13-15 05:09 PM
And at no point does it cast asians in an overarching negative light

There were asian good guys and asian bad guys

Plus everyone basically kept calling the only white male an idiot the whole movie lol
12697668, You know what old Jack Burton says at a time like this?
Posted by Atillah Moor, Tue Jan-13-15 05:19 PM
Who?

He gets clowned throughout the entire movie. Like when he throws the knife to kill the main villain AND MISSES!!

I swear that movie is genius, but that's just me.
12697699, he really does get clowned the whole time. and its not just you.

white chicks is not racist and shouldn't be on the list at all, let alone in the top 15
12697679, It's something though.
Posted by Atillah Moor, Tue Jan-13-15 05:24 PM
I'm okay with calling it racist until we figure out what that is. I mean two black men dressing up like white women just seems weird to me.
12697701, The hell you say? If that's not racist, I don't know what is.
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Tue Jan-13-15 05:43 PM
White face? Check
Playing into white stereotypes? Check

Unless you're going with the black folks can't be racist angle, I don't know how you can't put this towards the top of the list.
12697739, that movie is SUPER racist.
Posted by ShinobiShaw, Tue Jan-13-15 06:08 PM
12697642, Gone With The Wind
Posted by bentagain, Tue Jan-13-15 05:05 PM
I disagree with most of the list

alot of those movies were actually addressing race

usually through comedy

I see racism in hollywood pictures through many more unintended manifestions

they might as well say Do The Right Thing is racist.

I guess cartoons weren't considered?
12697650, 'Birth Of A Nation' should have its own separate category

I'm tryna be better off, not better than...
12697688, I think Falling Down should be in the top 5
Posted by handle, Tue Jan-13-15 05:31 PM
What a vile film that was.

And I believe the original original open number of Aladdin was "Arabs are the greatest thieves on earth!"

How is Bulworth on the list???
12697693, I almost rode with Falling Down as racist
Posted by Atillah Moor, Tue Jan-13-15 05:37 PM
But he does go after white supremacists in the film also so I mean-- he's kind of mad at everybody/thing.
12697707, that neo-Nazi got it as bad as anyone
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Jan-13-15 05:45 PM
And the thing about Falling Down to me is that Michael Douglas's character isnt a sympathetic one

There are moments where he does something cool (rocket launcher) but for the most part he's obviously crazy AF
12697727, He's racist against the HUMAN RACE
Posted by handle, Tue Jan-13-15 05:58 PM
Could have been called "Do the wrong thing."

THINK ABOUT IT.
12697744, He was mad as hell that the only guy cosigning his crazy behavior

What an awful racist film.
12697754, RE: Where's Crash???
Posted by bentagain, Tue Jan-13-15 06:23 PM
again, just as in this debatable list

Crash addresses race and race issues

what's racist about Crash?
12697764, Emasculated black husband hero for a day white cop
Posted by Atillah Moor, Tue Jan-13-15 06:29 PM
We see how black men catch ass beatings for dumb ass shit, but this character won't take an L for his wife?? Then bitch cop character is suddenly a good guy cuz he "saved" the same woman he assaulted. Fuck that. Also supports the black life is meaningless angle with the Ryan Phillipe character. White folks always trying to humanize their worst examples of humanity meanwhile non whites gotta protest for the exact same shit. Fuck all of that. I mean IMHO of course.
12697783, Ehh, I think you're reachin' on this one, but that's just my opinion
Posted by bentagain, Tue Jan-13-15 06:48 PM
as I said in a previous reply

is Do The Right Thing racist?

I think folks are confusing films that actually address race and racism in our country

with films that are actually racist

the story lines in Crash, you don't think those happen?

I can see what you're getting at with Dillon's character

but, I think it's a bit of a stretch, IMO
12697857, DTRT is a tough one to call
Posted by Atillah Moor, Tue Jan-13-15 08:03 PM
Becuase I'm in the "why didn't dude understand it's NOT HIS PIZZA PLACE!?" camp.

Anyway as far as Crash goes Hustle and Flows character was your typical "scared negro" which until recently has been a very ommon and often used trope alongside the one of the menacing negro. There's even a living color skit about it. There are writers who have been quoted saying the exact same thing in an attempt to explain the racism of movies, television, and comics of say-- the 40's thru the 80's.

Hustle and Flows character could have easily been written to take a bullet for his wife, the cop lies about it, and there still could be Dillon's white knight moment of glory. Saving Hustle and Flows widow from say the menacing negro they introduced.

My point being the character didn't have to be a coward, but they wanted to portray him that way.

I hate to make assumptions (true/not true) but I'm wondering if you may be the target demographic.
12699847, ^^^ Crash actually came on last night, caught some of it...
Posted by bentagain, Thu Jan-15-15 01:20 PM
I think what is being labeled racist

is just a bad movie

based on race relations

as DJ pointed out below, the opening robbery scene is hard to digest

but I did like the DA storyline, especially in these times

dealing with his racist ass wife, and trying to pin a medal on a black man after the carjacking to win votes...

if you take all of the police stories

I think maybe the movie was trying to cover too much ground

as you said, they have Dillon's character molesting a black woman, and then saving her

maybe to illustrate how a police officer responds when he doesn't know the race of a person...?

they also throw in the cop shooting an undercover cop

and Phillipe's character could be an illustration of how an otherwise, perhaps race neutral person could become radicalized by being employed by the LAPD

he is offended by Dillon's initial actions, and requests a new partner

after some time on the force

we see him shoot Lorenz's character for the ever prevalent, reaching into his waistband...

just a thought

and Hustle and Flow's character did get some redemption

when Lorenz and Luda try to carjack him, he does go apeshit

on everybody, including the police

ehh, I don't think it's a racist movie

I just think it was poorly executed

Watching Lorenz hitch hike...in LA...WTF...who f'n hitch hikes in a major US city

made absolutely no sense at all.

12697869, Personally, the robbery scene just never sat well with me
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Jan-13-15 08:15 PM
I feel the Wayans coulda got away with it, but the whole "even though we're dressed nice, they STILL think we're gonna rob em.....*robs em*" shit just rubbed me the wrong way, and I may have even checked out on the rest of the movie at that point.

And why did Sam Jack have to have that 'Frederick Douglass' afro

I was being a little facetious but the premise of the movie did kinda bother me when I first saw it
12697890, An indestructible black guy with black family = black movie
Posted by Atillah Moor, Tue Jan-13-15 08:42 PM
So that could have eaten into costs. I think they went with black vs white simply to play up the polar opposite nature of comic book hero and villain. Jackson's character being physically frail yet never dies from his frailty makes him indestructible in his own right. I liked the Fredfro.

Also gotta give props that the home invader character was white as we're most of the wrong doers save for Shamylan and Jackson.

I rather liked his Fredfro.
12699877, RE: yeah cuz it's already too many movies w/that plot line
