12690869, How can I get better at my Instagram pics?
Posted by lightworks, Tue Jan-06-15 11:15 AM
I don't have a real camera I just use my iphone.

Please critique my pics, specifically these three I took this morning:

Please and thanks.

You have to get better at photography to take better Instagram pics.

Judging by the pics you posted though you have a good eye.
12690963, Thanks!

12690877, i think your framing is pretty good
Posted by veritas, Tue Jan-06-15 11:23 AM
i'm not an accomplished photographer or anything, but the framing looks okay to me.

how are you changing your levels? are you using filters or using the different tools?

12690881, think about the composition
Posted by luminous, Tue Jan-06-15 11:27 AM
what's the subject? How can you make the subject standout?

i think, you could have used the rule of thirds in a couple of those photos to lay it out better. especially in the photo of the escalators. the escalators could have been 2/3 of the photo instead of most of the photo.

I think with the street photos, play around with where you place the camera. try a couple photos with the camera close to the ground to change the perspective a little bit. Also, i would crop out some of the street or lower the horizon... i would also use rule of thirds here, or place the focus off center...

12690888, Ah interesting critique.
Posted by lightworks, Tue Jan-06-15 11:30 AM
Yeah the escalator photo is interesting because its a huge escalator and I tried to show the scale of if by having it take up the entire photo but I get your point.

Here's another pic I took a while ago of the same escalator but I don't like it as much:

12690906, that's an interesting photo
Posted by luminous, Tue Jan-06-15 11:40 AM
what stands out to me are the grassy patches on the side... i would include more of that in the shot to provide some kind of contrast.

i would be kinda particular about how the stairs line up with the edges of the photo, because the stairs are so linear.

12690913, Also, in the first stair picture

i love the pop of color with the mother and child in the red and blue coat.
12690926, thank you!
Posted by lightworks, Tue Jan-06-15 11:49 AM
Thanks for your good points too.

Very helpful.
12691131, this is better. with this subject, your lines are more important.
Posted by Deadzombie, Tue Jan-06-15 02:17 PM
using the lines of the escalator and having them straight up and down/left to right as possible (or some other deliberate use).

it would take some practive with holding the ca.... i mean phone.

actually, fuck this thread - its about camera phones.
12690884, study The Rule of Thirds

12690894, 50% of being a good Photographer is just know WHAT to shoot
Posted by Adwhizz, Tue Jan-06-15 11:34 AM

12690920, great photo

12690928, nice!!!

12691139, this isn't on sysmetry enough to be striking.
Posted by Deadzombie, Tue Jan-06-15 02:21 PM
and it's too close to symmetry to have real/exaggerated motion.

it should be either or.

the walls of the tunnel provides enough texture to make an interesting phote, but the geometry has to come into play.

also, stop standing straight up.

your vantage point looks like tourists snapshots when you do.

bend down.

put the camera to the ground.

place the camera in a place that will let the viewer look at an old scene (like metro tunnels), in a new way.
12691184, Good thoughts. Thanks. What about this one?

12690946, Stop taking photos of that same subway tunnel...
Posted by ndibs, Tue Jan-06-15 12:00 PM
I think everyone who's been to dc has seen it or one like it...

The first six times cool. After that it's overkill.
12690959, lol ok.
Posted by lightworks, Tue Jan-06-15 12:09 PM
It's like 3 different stations that I seem to rotate between but if you think they are all the same one I guess that's evidence enough of a point lol.
12691134, mostly all the tunnels look a like.
Posted by Deadzombie, Tue Jan-06-15 02:18 PM
but im still on your side.
12691149, good pics... I second the rule of thirds
Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Jan-06-15 02:27 PM
and I actually like the escalator photo that takes up the whole frame.

Pretty good eye.

Keep shooting.
12691160, Thanks!

12691359, I like this one

One way you can apply the Rule of Thirds here is on the horizontal.

1/3 street, 1/3 building, 1/3 sky

or (my fav)

2/3 street, 1/3 building

Try enabling the grid on your camera.
I should use it more, too. heh.

12691380, Yeah the reason I focused so much on the street was I liked
Posted by lightworks, Tue Jan-06-15 05:35 PM
the tire marks in the center--it helped to divide the pic.

But not everyone sees it like that lol

Good advice!
12691387, You're already applying the Rule of Thirds and didn't even know it.
