And both stories are good. In some ways, FMA Brotherhood is more engaging in a brutal way, but the premises in the first anime help set the stage for it, both character-wise and world-wise.


IMO, the FMA first/original anime was overall better done as an anime since it was created ground-up as such, and not as a pure manga adaptation.
