Male student named Connecticut school's prom queen

DANBURY, Conn. (AP) — A 17-year-old boy has been named prom queen at his Connecticut high school and says he's making a point about gender labeling and discrimination.

Nasir Fleming won the Danbury High School title last week. He was nominated as prom king and prom queen but decided to be considered only for queen.

Fleming tells the News Times newspaper (http://bit.ly/1tOB5xa ) he's been openly gay since sixth grade and has struggled with bullying. He says he isn't sure whether the students who submitted his name were making fun of his sexuality but decided it was a good opportunity to make a point about the importance of being who you are.

He says either way he's "still fabulous."

Fleming says students at the prom were supportive and erupted in cheers when he won.

The point about gender labelling is a good one, but *shrug* this seems like a bit much.

If my son is gay, I wouldn't want him to automatically associate his sexuality with femininity because of what he's seen on TV. There are plenty of men who are gay and still "masculine"

But if that's what's in his heart, it's counterproductive to maintaining a positive relationship with him to try and fight it.

maybe someone w/ more experience can explain it to me, but if you're gay, you're still a man, no? why not be the gay prom king? why do so many gay men seem to associate as female?

if you FEEL like you're woman trapped in a man's body, that's something different but it doesn't seem like that's the case w/ most "queen"-type gays.

okay.

do you feel the effeminate "queen" stereotype is exaggerated in the media (either deliberately or inadvertantly) as a means of portraying gay men as somehow less of a man?

in other words, do you think that most gay TV and movie characters are/were portrayed as overly effeminate for some express purpose?

i think if fictional gay characters tend to be played effeminate it's b/c that's what the audience expects. i think if gay guys on reality tv are often effeminate it's b/c the producers want the more flamboyant characters b/c they feel those characters have potential to be explosive.

i don't think there's any conspiracy out there to portray gay men a certain way.

everyone is different

if there is a male option

but jesus was rather dismissive of ppl that
were always harping on personal sins while neglecting the
weightier matters of the law.
especially if they they didn't have works that bore the fruit
of the faith they claimed to have.

when i preached, i talked about how if we didn't come together
as a congregation to challenge the powerful instutions that are
killing our children and our poor, then jesus would not recognize
us as his fam when he came back, and we'd be thrown into the fire
like a dead fig tree.


but like i said, your posts don't remind me of what jesus said
we should do.

i mean, i don't know what you do in your free time.
but if you are anything in real life like you are on OKP,
i think you'll be cut off and thrown into the fire

I'm not going to marginalize or belittle what you are telling us. Preaching the uncompromised Word of God is a task. And the first time is always an experience to remember. But please, do tell us the name of the church and pastor that allowed you the honor and privilege to speak to his/her flock?

But he ALWAYS told sinners to Go and Sin no more (in context, Jesus always expected a heart and life transformation) and to live a life according to God's character and expectations.

or he accepted it b/c he didn't want to cower to the bullying that's plagued him since 6th grade and he wanted to show those who sought to shame him that being an effeminate boy is nothing to be ashamed of or that at least HE isn't ashamed of it and so he wanted to throw that shade they tried to throw right back at them by embracing the title and not running from it. yes, he could've just gone w/the king nomination and made a different point. he chose this one.

if he were my son i'd be proud of him and i'd take this move as an indicator that i raised him right. i'd support him to the fullest however he decided to handle the nomination issue. and i'd want him to know that i love him w/o regard for how masculine or effeminate he is. especially since so much of the world around him will give him grief for being himself i'd want him to know that nothing he chooses to do w/his masculinity or effeminity would change my love for him. if i had any problems w/this i'd keep that to myself and not show it to him. b/c my discomfort w/his effeminity would be MY problem, not his. b/c there's nothing wrong w/my son being femme.

Why can't he be prom king?

that would be MY problem not his. i'd offer my support and congratulations to my son and then i'd whine and complain and wring my hands in private w/my husband. i would not make my homophobia and misogyny my son's issue. b/c i wouldn't want to make his life harder than it might already be if he's living as an effeminate boy. my struggle w/his identity would have to occur where he couldn't pick up on it. i'd do my best to keep that part of my struggle from him.

If your kid is gay, there isn't a damn thing you can do to change that. So you love him as he is, you accept him as he is, and you support the choices he makes in life.

The initial question was would you let him run for homecoming queen. This implies that despite your pre-interventions and perfect parenting, he has inexplicably decided to act against you wishes.
You answered no, you would not let him run.

The second question is given that he has already chosen to defy you, how would you stop him from running for queen? Would you disown him? Beat him? Kick him out of the house? Shame him?

The way you answered reminds me of parents who say my kids would never do drugs. I raised them right.

See I'm an involved parent (I know my son) and my son knows who he is and he respects himself and his family. but the old testament DID address mass killings.
you know, in the part that said you can't go around murdering people.

the old testament is remarkably specific about
what is and is not allowed under the law. the old
testament said what women should do during their period,
what fabrics can be worn, what can and cannot be done during the Sabbath.

so why, oh why, would the old testament leave out the bit about
dudes marrying dudes and women marrying women?

did the folks writing the old testament just forget about it?
or did they not write about it because homosexuality--
as distinguished from heterosexuality-- was not a word, not a concept,

at a time when roman soldiers were conquering villages

If i had a homosexual son, and he was nominated prom Queen, I would first ask him how does he feel about people casting him as a woman, since the Queen is a woman's Role.


Secondly, I'd explain to him the gender specific role of the Queen and the King and why there are dual functioning titles within a Royal Court. Hopefully he would already know these facts.

Third, I would explain to him the intentionality and meanness that was heaped on him by those that thought it was funny when his name was cast on the ballot.

Lastly, I'd explain to my son that he should stand up for himself, maintain his dignity and above else always conduct himself as a man regardless of his sexual desires.

I think this part is lost on society right now.

Just because you're a homosexual doesn't mean you should behave as anything other than a man or a woman.

those who nominated him for queen were attempting to make him feel shame for who he is.

he can't stand up for himself physically, since he doesn't know who did it, and can't just go around fighting the whole school.

So his method of defense was to own it. To say, okay if you're gonna nominate me as queen, thinking it's some kind of joke, I'm gonna WIN, and be the most fabulous queen I can be.

It may not be the course of action you or I would take, but it's meant to be self defense.

Never let people play you out for a sucker to prove a point.
