>Larry Wilmore To Succeed Stephen Colbert With Jon Stewart-Produced Show To Launch In January

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Friday May 9, 2014 @ 4:47pm PDT

Just like it did with Stephen Colbert nine years ago, Comedy Central and Jon Stewart have gone to the bench of correspondents on The Daily Show to find a host for the post-Daily Show 11:30 PM slot. Senior Black correspondent Larry Wilmore will host a new nightly program, The Minority Report, which will launch in January 2015, following the end of The Colbert Report. (Colbert will be departing Comedy Central at the end of his contract in December to prepare for taking over CBS’ Late Show from David Letterman.) Like with The Colbert Report, The Minority Report was created by Jon Stewart and will be produced by his Busboy Prods., with Stewart and Wilmore serving as executive producers.

The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore will feature a comedic take on the day’s news. It will feature a panel of voices, which Comedy Central say “are currently underrepresented in comedy and television.”The move, with Stewart continuing to produce both The Daily Show and its companion program, will likely help keep the comedian in the Comedy Central fold when his contract comes up next year. “We are thrilled to be expanding our relationship with Jon Stewart and Busboy Productions, and are looking forward to the world getting to know Larry Wilmore even better,” said Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless Said Stewart: “While Larry Wilmore is a brilliant comic and showrunner, this is all just a complicated ruse to get him to move to New York and turn him into a Knicks fan.” Responded Wilmore, “I love the city of New York and promise to only wear my Laker t-shirts when I’m layering.”

12442673, Should be good, wish Cenac was still around
Posted by B9, Fri May-09-14 07:14 PM
He may have been a bit too dry to build a show around, but he was my favorite of the recent group that had left.
12442736, maybe he'll join larry
Posted by gusto, Fri May-09-14 08:40 PM
if you ever watch the paley center special on the writers for TDS (its on netflix) it was interesting to see wyatt with all those white writers. He seemed almost uncomfortable. I can see why he left. If wilmore has more minority voices maybe he'll join up.

hopefully. just hope they have good minority writers. *paging angieee*
12442803, Wyatt Cenac is working on a project for AMC.
Posted by j0510, Fri May-09-14 10:30 PM
I don't think he would have the time to do both. But it would still be cool if he did some work on The Minority Report.
12442799, I wish Wyatt had gotten the show
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri May-09-14 10:19 PM
left just a little too soon.

he won an Emmy as a writer on The Bernie Mack show.
12442847, Writing =/= delivery. Its a lot different on stage

Neal Brennan, the co-creator of the Chappelle Show didn't even start doing Stand up until like maybe 2 years ago.
12442903, Larry is like Black Harold Ramis. I love it.

Even on Happy Endings, dude cracked me up.
12443039, No, he's been doing stand up since the 90s.

Posted by spades, Sat May-10-14 09:20 AM
Dude's got mad writing credits and his delivery, in this kind of vehicle, is just fine. His problem is gonna be demographics.

12704533, Yeah he's really not. I don't see it. I'd take Jess Williams.

.
12442806, I definitely will be watching this. I love this idea.

Larry Wilmore does great work on The Daily Show.
12442809, Awesome!!

I'll be adding it to the dvr
12442813, Awesome choice. I really hope people tune in.

12442999, Honestly, I'm a lil' worried about it.
Posted by spades, Sat May-10-14 11:17 AM
The demos of CC doesn't necesarrily favor him.

We shall see, I suppose.
12443019, Wait, black people don't watch Comedy Central or TDS?
Posted by ZooTown74, Sat May-10-14 11:58 AM
That's news to me.

I'd reckon black people make up a significantly smaller portion of CCs viewership than, say, MTV or ESPNs

Vare vare excited to hear this. I thought they would have gone John Oliver or Asif Mandvi first.

Larry Wilmore is a genius - Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Bernie Mac Show, The Office, and The Daily Show. That's a complete player.

Posted by nipsey, Tue Jan-20-15 02:17 PM
I thought the show was good. It’s only the first episode so they need to work out the kinks and Larry needs to get some of the jitters out. The first half is obviously cut in the vein of “The Daily Show”, “The Colbert Report”, and “Last Week Tonight”.

But I do like the roundtable panel that marked the second half of the show. It definitely has the most potential but having funny, smart, opinionated and engaging guests will be key for this segment. My favorite part was when Larry asked Bill Burr (who has a Black wife) during the “Keep it 100” portion of the panel discussion if he had to choose whether his kids be white or black (He couldn’t choose bi-racial. It had to be one or the other.) what would he choose. Bill definitely “kept it 100” by choosing white. “After hearing these statistics, white. Are you kidding me?”

12703238, the writing is awesome. Wilmore is super meh as host though.
Posted by illegal, Tue Jan-20-15 02:19 PM
it does seem like a thing he can improve. it seems like just small rhythms are off a bit.
12703405, it was good. you could tell his was a bit nervous
Posted by nsac7881, Tue Jan-20-15 04:08 PM
and the panel was a bit awkward at times, Bill seemed out of place, Talib seemed pressed, and the woman overly giddy

but i laughed a few times

i hope he gets a chance for it to click
12703437, i thought it was solid. still a lot of nerves. it will find it's footing though.
Posted by PROMO, Tue Jan-20-15 04:33 PM
same with Larry Wilmore.
12703475, too many panelists.
Posted by gusto, Tue Jan-20-15 05:09 PM
2 would have been ideal. 3 maybe. but 4 is too much for a half hour show.
but good first show.
wish larry was younger.
12704273, Yup. I think he should kill the comedians on panels.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jan-21-15 12:55 PM
You should do comedic bits with comedians, and then witty conversations with smart people and experts. Don't mix the two.

12704287, agreed.

.
12704310, I think you can do it with the right kind of comedians
Posted by nipsey, Wed Jan-21-15 01:16 PM
Not just any old comedian. A comedian that is insightful would do well. A Chris Rock or Louis CK type would be perfect. The problem is finding enough comedians that could fill that role.
12704277, i liked it. not something i was expecting.
Posted by hardware, Wed Jan-21-15 12:56 PM
interested to see where the segment goes if its a returning one
12704357, I laughed more than I thought I would...
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jan-21-15 01:50 PM
his delivery is ehhh..

and he doesn't seem as quick witted or naturally funny like Colbert or Daily.

It was better than I expected.
12704391, Colbert I think is one of the GOATS. Can't many live up to what he was
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jan-21-15 02:09 PM
doing.

12704418, IDK how Colbert was able to not break character
Posted by bentagain, Wed Jan-21-15 02:25 PM
there were a handful of times that he broke

because the shit he was doing was so fucking ridiculous

but I would put up money that there isn't anybody else out there

that could get through a nightly show

w/o breaking on a regular basis

it really was incredible.
12704432, I actually don't think his new show will be as interesting as Colbert Report
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jan-21-15 02:29 PM
World really doesn't need another straight up late night show. Colbert Report was something different and uniquely entertaining.

12704439, Colbert of Wilmore?
Posted by bentagain, Wed Jan-21-15 02:35 PM
I didn't think Colbert moving to late night included his character

is he doing the Colbert Report character as a late night host?

can't really being mad at being tapped as Letterman's successor
12704481, He said he won't be doing
Posted by nipsey, Wed Jan-21-15 03:00 PM
"Stephen Colbert" on the new show.
12704468, it should be noted (shouldn't have to be really), but
Posted by hardware, Wed Jan-21-15 02:53 PM
the first episode of any late night/talk show is usually the worst

it takes months for the show to actually become what it is in this genre of television

i consider this to be a great start
12704476, I remember the first Fallon show, DeNiro was trollin' and he was sweating
Posted by bentagain, Wed Jan-21-15 02:57 PM
profusely

12704401, Dead @ Brotha finally gets a show on late night TV, but...
Posted by bentagain, Wed Jan-21-15 02:12 PM
of course he has to work on MLK day.

PERFECT

I love that CC is continuing his Daily Show character of

'bout time a brotha'...

ala Colbert's tea party character

I do agree with a reply above that a 4 person panel on a half hour show is too much

Bill Burr, Corey Booker and Kweli didn't have nearly any airtime

didn't know who the female was, but it sounded like she is part of the show

I can see I Keep It 100 becoming a meme

I want a T-Shirt!

Rev Al spreading himself too thin

etc...

alot the jokes and race stories are heightened being presented by an AA

LOVED IT
12704556, funnier than i expected. (i expected the worse)
