12407897, Black Podcasts.
Posted by spades, Thu Apr-10-14 11:21 AM
I used to listen to The Root podcasts, I LOVED it, but they don't play well with Stitcher, which I don't get, because the rest of Salon's podcasts are on there, but I digress.

Can y'all put me up on some blackity black podcasts? I need some new shit.

Also, any new and good podcats would be appreciated as well.

Thanks.

Aisha really gets in depth with her guests. From birth all the way up to the present. You really get to learn about the lives of these famous folks. It's free flowing and quite entertaining. You get the guest who has let his guard down and isn't telling some pre-prepped story long enough for a 5 minute segment on a late night show.

12408009, bomani jones show is ok
Posted by southphillyman, Thu Apr-10-14 12:02 PM
his old show was WAY better imo, but the current one isn't bad
the show is mainly about social issues or his perspective on current events

i found out about the black guy who tips from bomani jones original show
it's ok but has seriously fallen off recently imo
the cohost (the wife) is so dumb it's almost cringe worthy to listen to
and now days the show is less funny and kind of bitchy with the main host bitching either about gay rights or what someone said to him on twitter

combat jack show is good again imo. went thru a rough patch couple months ago when they were transitioning to be more commercial but recently it seems like they are back in their comfort spot

the read. my girl put me on to this and it's funny though i'd say it's an acquired taste since it's kind of gossipy and gay
12408163, What's the read 'about'?
Posted by spades, Thu Apr-10-14 12:54 PM

Lol

That really is the best way to describe it. I used to be a fan of kid fury's youtube channel. The read is ok but I prefer him by himself. They basically just talk about pop culture and read folks

I don't think they realize that they have more fans than they realize. I think I may buy one of their shirts to show support. Also, I hope they will open up their show to include listener participation, espcially during football season. I would love to call in and discuss fantasy football, both college and pros.
12408331, Really appreciate that. Most def will have you on. Just let me know

12408387, No problem, man.

I just bought a c-note worth of shirts from your store today just to let you know I am sincere with it. Also, I am excited to chop up game with you and the crew on fantasy football this season.

I will say that I am not on some one uppage/holier than thou shit with it. I definitely have knowledge and experience, but believe in having fun with it. I am a fantasy fanatic which is known to those who know me in my personal life. Anyone who is in 50 fantasy baseball leagues, at once, has to be on some other shit, which I am proud to wear as a badge of honor. Lol

I think we could have fun discussing fantasy sporta and hopefully it will help your podcast increase in popularity.

I will hit you up and see if you and your crew is down to set aside 30 mins or so to discuss it once the season starts. I appreciate the opportunity bruh.
12408686, That was some real shit bruh. *salutes*

I don't want listener participation. Nah, fuck us. Jerm turnt up now in the offseason. Imagine what will happen as Johnny Football does his best Romo impression next fall.

They talk about real shit plus there is Cleveland (Akron, technically) representation on the podcast.

Now if you'll excuse me , I have to go back to find their archives. I need a Zimmerman, Wale, and Lebron rant. Do I want to listen to the Cleveland slander after the decision assuming it's there?
12408585, Aight
Posted by BabyYoda, Thu Apr-10-14 04:21 PM
Well..I see no issue with listener participation. I think Frocast is a podcast for the people and there is nothing wrong with mingling with the people who support them.

You are certainly within your right not to listen should they invite me to build on this football shit, but I definitely think it would set them apart from other podcasts.

The last thing I want to do is take away their identity and know that regardless of whether I am on it or you or anyone else for that matter, that I will always listening to their hilarious show while being entertained until they decide to stop podcasting.

The Evening Jones: Bomani Jones talks about any and everything except politics (doesn't want to lose that paper) and sports (contractually forbidden from it so he REALLY doesn't want to lose that paper).

Girl on Guy: Aisha Tyler has in depth interviews with various guests. She asks them about their entire lives and it really is quite entertaining. Even if you're not too familiar with the guest's work.

Black on Black Cinema: Four guys do MST3K thing with Black movies. Past movies they've done are Boomerang, 12 Years, Coming to America, New Jack City, Black Dynamite. The podcast is alright. I feel like the guys are all young and some of their comments seem to reflect immaturity that takes me out of the zone when listening. I have no problem with the jokes. That's the point of the show. To clown around. But I feel like I'm on a train with teenagers who just don't know when to quit. Also, they seem to do no prep for these movies other than watching them before the podcast. They get names of actors wrong and a lot of the behind the scenes stuff. That type of stuff bothers me because how can I take what you say seriously, when you don't know the name of the actor in the scene you're talking about. All that said, it's an okay podcast.

The Music Snobs: Probably the most professional (independent) podcast I listen to. The dudes are on point. Always entertaining. Arthur, Jehan, Scoop and Isaac really know their stuff and their music discussions are must listen IMO.
12408288, Black on Black Cinema is awful

You could. Those dudes dont know half of wtf they are talking about. As mentioned previously, I think its because of their youth.
12409462, I mainly listen because they discuss Black movies
Posted by nipsey, Fri Apr-11-14 01:31 PM
Do you know of any other podcasts that do that? I would definitely listen to those rather than Black on Black Cinema if they're out there.
12688667, those guys aren't that young
Posted by b.Touch, Fri Jan-02-15 12:39 PM
they're all like mid-30s or so

I generally like Black on Black Cinema (while acknowledging its shortcomings) best when they really love a movie or when they don't like the movie at all and just roast it (see also, Tyler Perry's Temptation). I like the podcast overall, but a lot of the facts are wrong (why would they think Michael Jackson would have or should have written the music for "The Wiz"? It's a musical!) and the episodes can meander a bit because they do blow-by-blow coverage.

Posted by DickGrayson, Fri Apr-11-14 10:41 AM
With Jamelle Smith and Michael Hill from ESPN. It's a black podcast loosely based on sports, but moreso just them sharing the black experience based on topics of the day. They get a lot out of guests that come on. Moreso than any other interviews I have heard. Even guest hosts bring a lot to the table when they have them.
12409471, I forgot to mention them
Posted by nipsey, Fri Apr-11-14 01:34 PM
Yeah I listen to most of their podcasts. I like it because Jemele and Michael Smith ain't no different than people I know. You know they're on TV and all that, but to hear them talk and tell stories, it's like kicking it with one of your boys. Real down to Earth. Plus Jemele went to neighborhood HS so I know where she's coming from with her perspective on things.

I'm only recently getting into the Zo What
Show. Definitely informative and entertaining input from all the cast.
Zo is a good host and co-host Geoff Brown regularly drops jewels within all his humor.
12689098, can't abide Holcomb, will listen to Zo depending on the topic
Posted by b.Touch, Sat Jan-03-15 02:20 AM
the problem is the co-hosts and many of the guests are close-minded middle-aged black folks, so when the topics veer towards women's rights, anti-gay discrimination, and basically anything not a step removed from whatever was acceptable negro behavior in 1985 the shows become difficult to watch to the point of angering.

Especially with female guests.

Lol I feel you. They can be incredibly ignorant at times, but more often than not, they make me laugh.

>almost kinda intimidating as i usually like a bit
>lighter/funnier convo, but its goooood

because they hit you with some shit that "damn, never really thought about that" ... and go in.

Plus, one of the main things is that the dudes are pretty engaging, distinct, personalities. sometimes you KNOW what a certain someone is gonna say and you tune in for that reason.
12690196, I'm a regular listener to the dudes on PodcastJuice.net
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Jan-05-15 02:00 PM
First started listening because of their Prince podcasts but their non-Prince material is pretty hilarious, particularly the Geeked Out and This Is What We Do series. A couple of over-the-top personalities there which make it hilarious.

also, as mentioned, NappyAfro. You gotta listen to it for the KingJerm/SauleWright combo. Jerm definitely is the dude where you hear him and you automatically associate the show with his presence.

One time, a LONG time ago (it feels like), El Blocko was actually on their podcast... it was hilarious to hear him.
12690207, my faves:
Posted by PROMO, Mon Jan-05-15 02:07 PM
Evening Jones (Bomani Jones)
His And Hers (Michael Smith & Jemele Hill)
The Black Guy Who Tips
Desus vs. Mero
Race Wars (Sherrod Small & Kurt Metzger)
The Champs (Neal Brennan - Chappelle Show, etc. & Moshe Kasher)
Rantin & Ravin (Yamanieka Saunders)
The Read
The Brilliant Idiots (Charlemagne Tha God & Andrew Schulz)
Jalen & Jacoby (Jalen Rose & David Jacoby)
Combat Jack Show
Juan Epstein (Cipha Sounds & Rosenburg)
The Fan Bros
The Music Snobs
The Beige Philips Show (Dante Nero)

i would throw all those in that category. it's not always black hosts but most are (or are one black host, one white host) and those are black sports, music, comedy and culture.

I listened to the latest episode of this dude...

and he spent 30 minutes talking about how people was dissing his wife.. and he was on some "Eff you" ish... enough for me not to listen anymore....

Then talking about greatest album skits and not mentioning De La or Black Sheep..

Nah Bro
12702834, Well you gotta know the context behind that
Posted by JayTeeDee, Tue Jan-20-15 10:03 AM
I don't know how often you listened but basically they had a 5 star iTunes review policy that they would read your review regardless of what you said positive or negative as long as you left 5 stars. And lots of people were nice but every now and then especially last year were using as a bully pulpit to air grievances about the show. His wife in particular especially about her accent. People would call her dumb and country and folks have tried to leave voice mails going in on her. And this show has been going hot for 5 years so imagine having to occasionally read feedback about people going in on your wife. Dude got fed up and vented. I don't blame him.

The Combat Jack Show (tho I miss the original format with the big group)

my favorite podcast (across the board) episode to date.
12702736, I'd been having the worst month ever
Posted by b.Touch, Tue Jan-20-15 03:41 AM
until I heard that episode.

It was like all of Desus' trolling on this board, and on Twitter, was training and prep for that moment where he shut Andrew Schulz (who, I think, was trolling him too?) down.

but they all hanging out getting them Guy Code checks now.
12703232, Of course. Schulz can be obtuse, but he's not THAT obtuse.
Posted by b.Touch, Tue Jan-20-15 02:16 PM
Still, I could barely breathe when Desus told him that the MTA ran the Underground Railroad. I'm laughing now just typing it out.
12703000, Nah, Charlemagne condoned slavery on the last episode...

He messed up with that one. Schultz is annoying as shit by the way.
12703241, Charlamagne is a troll; sometimes he just wants to get under ppls skin

Posted by SouthwestAirlines, Tue Jan-20-15 01:32 PM
Host: Ali Leroi (comic, writer, producer & director)
Co-Host: Owen Smith (comic, actor & writer)

They mostly have black entertainers & personalities on the show
Very funny, in-depth & insightful interviews

A list of some folks they've had on the podcast:

Malcolm D Lee
Andre Cymone
Luenell
Leslie Jones
Todd Bridges
Tichina Arnold
Reggie Hudlin
Sinbad
Bishop Don Magic Juan
Debbie Allen
Russell Simmons
Ernest Dickerson

They started in 2014 and have about thirty episodes or so

Personal favorites: The Sinbad & Luenell episodes go hard. Didnt realize how crazy Sinbad was. And Luenell is just the truth.

Been a lurker on GD from way way back, but figured this was as good a chance as any to plug my show For Colored Nerds.

We're two friends who talk news, culture, and argue for the rest of the show. Made it to #3 in New and Noteworthy and the AV club just gave us a nod for our episode on Kendrick and the myth of Black on Black violence.

Here are our stitcher and iTunes links and that AV Club article, just in case you don't take my word for it.
