I think the scene itself sort of highlights the what's changed between genearations. And Denzel though he understood it, didn't really embody it. He didn't feel the weight of the emotion behind what's being said. he got the words but the emotion just isn't there right. The nuisance factor of the question and the timing of the question isn't the only factor. It's the notion of 'this boy still don't get why I do what I do in this world we living in. if he don't learn soon he's gon' be in trouble.'
