I like the experimental quality of the sounds and samples your working off as well as the sense of rhythm and the electro-ish influence. On the flip side the beats may end up being a little to cold and dissonant. A little hint of melody in the bass or the upper range either sampled and played could really open up your sound. That's all I got, don't walk in traffic.
37487, RE: jayech new music.. for critique
Posted by The3rdOne, Tue Jun-17-08 05:40 PM
i listened to the first four on your page. Sounds like you are finding your sound. I see good potential. I think you keep your joints simple on purpose tho. Keep it up.

fire escape - good shit. all about the chops.
REM - okay..Are you playing live or is that chopped?
record - really dope...time sig? 7/8? dont knwo what the fuck that is but i like it.
ooze - i like it.
weekdays - good guitar chop
wakey wakey - nice. would make a hot song with lyrics on it.
37490, RE: newer
Posted by Names, Tue Jun-17-08 06:04 PM
r.e.m everything is live but the drums (oh shit and the guitar is an elliot smith sample, whoops) and records is actually 4/4 if I'm not mistaken, its all in how you divy that shit up. I've got a couple weird time signature beats I might throw up eventually. Thanks for the listens
38132, RE: newer

I like fire escape and records.

Ooze has a nice groove to it as well. Very chill.

Final Days - an ok beat, good break down
You're Lovely - Really feeling this one. Nice feel to it.
Stay Cool - not a bad track. Emcee is okay.
Do You Love Me - okay joint. you are finding your basslines.
The Beginning - This is okay. I would change some drum variation to it tho.
Green Blue - Nice chill joint. Like before, i would work on different drum variations. Not bad for a years work.

37654, Yo I'm diggin these....

Twist it up - Ha..sounds like a west coast (early) Dumhi. This is pretty ok.
New 2 - This is nice. Good chop. nice feel to it.
Flawsy - this is cool...reminds me of beats my man random used to make.
4 - this is ok. headnodder.
Brand New - it's ok. Flippin that curtis mayfield sample seems like a rite of passage for beatmakers
New 1 - ok. Once you find your pocket, I think you'll be able to improve with your chops and flips.

Abs Prayer - Its cool. Would have liked it better if you chopped it more. Thats just me tho. The drums sound so background.
Revolutionary - Not bad. seems a little untuned in parts. Keep on workin on that pocket.
Bitter - Must be a story behind this one. Tried to read your blog on your Black album project.
Breathe - okay this is tight.
Escalades - I like it. nice flip. It goes with the vocals.
Extremely Bored - This is tight also. good work

From My Block - This joint is nice. emcee is actually tight.
With A Quickness - okay. Sounds like some underground 90s stuff.
Chess Moves - This is okay. good match (no pun intended).

tribal funk - okay this is more like it. Really grimy. I like it.
Create - its okay. Sounds like you do a lot of freehand unquantized.
Kava - This is dope. Like the muting effect. Really grimy.
Tribal Callin - Sounds like you got you hands on some tribal sounds and went at it. this is cool. Good for experimenting.
Travelin - I like this here. sounds really broken. Good stuff, keep it up.

Get Up - not bad. Way to bring out the break drums and polish em.
Shadowboxing - This is ok. the first phrase sounds like some black milk stuff.
Pedal To Metal - different. Dope 80's synth horns. Anthem shit. gets nod.
Real Thang - Dope. Gave track a good feel. Tune kind off in certain spots, but it bangs.
Nice - good flip for the drumtrack. Quality chops.
Smoke - this is good. hard drums make the jazz bang. Would rhyme over this.

I'm A Boss - Nice flip. Never would have thought of this. good additions
Get It Started - Not your typical Philly music. This jawn is ok.
Back In The Day - Let me guess...."Christmas Time Is Here"? That's dope.
World In Changes - I like this a lot. Not a bad flip.
Me Im Jus Me - Track is nice. Not my style of rap, but they rode this nice. 2nd cat sounds like the heir to sir-mix-lot.
Aint A Dream - This is ok. Would have liked to heard an acapella on this. Keep your grind up.

Boston Massacre - This beat is sick. Good song. I like the last cat's flow. Good look on J Ro!
Blue Magic - This is dope. This actually works.
American Dreamin - This is cool. The vocals are off timing. Beat is tight. Sounds like Kev Brown drum programming.
Flawless Victory - not bad. Really raw. keep doing it.
Back In The Days - This is cool. You flow like Flud from Dumhi. Beat is tight.
A Beautiful Day - This is aight. interlude shit.
37662, thanks man

Y'all killin the mic on Flawless Victory. The beat is real cool..something about the tail on the snare hits me a little funny but that's my only beef on it.

For some reason, Boston Massacre makes me think of Halloween the movie..lol...but that cut is hitting hoard. Could use some tweaks in the mix, but ain't that true of all of us. Good shit!

I just started this instrumental today and I'm stuck. It just doesn't sit right with me and I would like to get other people's opinions while I'm still in early stages. I'm more into making electronic stuff more than just hip-hop, (my myspace profile is http://www.myspace.com/timwroteasong if you're curious)

anyways you can listen to the track at

http://timothypaulmoore.com/blog/?p=81

Thanks.
37850, Couple of ideas:
Posted by Soon, Sat Jul-05-08 09:45 PM
Cut out at least one if not two instruments EVERYWHERE. Not the same ones, of course, but like, let the electric piano and guitar chill while the acoustic piano and the synths duke it out, or let the synths relax while you riff on the e. piano.

You've got every instrument going at full steam the whole time, and everyone's playing improv-style licks. Overkill! Scale it back. I'd say let those dual synths breathe the most; they kind of run into each other as it is (try adjusting the timbre on one to give them more individuality, and the way you have it panned should take care of the rest). Really, those kinds of synths seem to work best if they kick in, do some damage, and drop out, and just coming back every once in a while for effect.

Like, there's great ideas and the overall groove is hip, but it's all getting buried in the sheer mass of the parts playing simultaneously.

The only thing I wish about the Amy joint is that the mixing were tweaked some. Like, the drums want to cut through, but there's so much open air in the music samples that it's killing the headroom. If you can make more room for the drums to snap properly, IMO this cut will bang even harder than it already is...it def. is banging btw.

Yo Real Soon,

Everyone starts with 1 post. Consider this an early post from my future career as a OKP internet message board veteran. Maybe one day I won't login because someone who just joined wants feedback on their tracks. Who knows...in the end, its all about the music:

--"Audio Warlord"-- I dig the music in this intro for your soundtape. I even get how the juxtaposed vocal scatting is used as an audio metaphor for machine guns. I think a couple phrases in your monologue need to be removed ASAP 2 better suit the conceptual qualities of the soundtape and this intro. I had a long explanation for why, but I erased it, mainly because text can come off as unkind and cold. I just want u 2 please remove specific phrases, which I will list (along with when they show up in the song) and listen 2 tha track again with pauses in place of where the phrases use to be and tell me it dosen't honestly sound better: "I've got nothing 2 say right hear (1:09)" and "I..don't know (1:24)."

--"Roame"-- This is my favorite track. I like the use of the sample. Ur rhymes aren't bad at all. Nice storytelling track. I think u should turn up the hook +3db, "when in Rome do as the Romans do." Also pan the 1st half of the hook all the way 2 tha left and the second half all the way 2 tha right. Leave the echo.

--"Dumhi Toast Remix"-- A fun track about bein' the toast of the town and alcohol metaphors. I think this track is alright. I like the addition of the singer on the track.

--"Sounded Wracked"-- Instrumental track wit' Eastern Flutes/Ouds and drum patterns but played by Western percussion sounds. I am not sure if u did that intentionally. Pretty good mix. One thing that I would have tried is to solo certain elements and then build the track back up all the way only 2 end it abbruptly.

--Random Grow Up Remix-- I like how u brought those very first synth sounds between when dude is 1st speaking and before the 1st hook back into the last verse. I also like the outro because intelligence never went out of style.

--Squeeze Real Soon Remix-- This beat is effective, but I would have liked 2 hear the beat take a unexpected direction during the bridge. Sometime near the end of the 2nd verse. It sounds like a big loop after awhile.

Overall, I think that u got talent and solid tracks. Keep makin' music

You've got some interesting ideas and some out-there melodies (not a bad thing), but I think your overall sound may be too cluttered. I'd focus on a couple melodies (maybe even a hook). It's easy to stack on rather than build on. You should build.

P.S. - Follow the link to my music, if you're so inclined.

Yo RightMined,

1st, Good 2c another producer from IN on the board. I truly appreciate the feedback.

2nd, My spelling and grammar are worth shit, so bare with the many reading pains ahead. I'm tired, so I give a fuck less.

3rd, U were general when u said my overall sound maybe too cluttered. I am not exactly sure what context u were applying, "cluttered" to. Did u mean that all of the sounds were overpowering each other? Or did u mean that the beat was overly complete 2 tha point that u could not forsee an MC being able 2 flow on top? Maybe u meant both? Anyway, I can agree with either and even both with certain tracks. I was actually anticipating that criticism. A track like "ohohriver" is a track that I think is cluttered period. The average rapper could not flow on a track like that. In the past, my style has also been misunderstood by people not just because I strive to be original and not follow trends, but because some of the tracks are meant to stay instrumentals. Meaning, no MC.

4th, Here is my honest opinion of your tracks. I kept in mind that in ur blog u said that the tracks were in their rough demo stage. In some cases I made some suggestions. Please take whatever I say at face value, its not like I think of myself as some high production authority and neither should u:

--The Goods-- The first time I heard this track I didn't like it. That melodic bassline u used (which sounded familiar btw) became annoying because I was anticipating it to change up the entire time and it never did. But the more I heard the track, the more it began to grow on me. I think that the intro is 2 long though. Its interesting how the drum change is suddle with that layered snare that showed up later in the track. I think u should keep that quality in the final beat. You only notice if ur really paying attention, it might not be apparent to the average listener. I am not sure if that was ur intention. I think that the beat could have used a bridge where the track would take a unexpected turn. Maybe add an additional instrument like an electric guitar, choir, horns, vocal sample etc. It became too formulaic and predicable by the end. I think that this track is good ground work for a cathcy track.

--Baybee-- Probably my favorite track. "Ohh baby," I dig that vocal sample. The track does sound like a big loop after awhile though. Find something in additional to the lined up snares 2 brake up the monotany. Perhaps find another part of the sample 2 chop. Or add some synths/piano. I know I hear an additonal melody in my head.

--Move-- For some reason I can hear Jean Grae over this track. I dig this one. I like that light, "lalalah lalalh lahd?" in the background, almost inaudible. It belongs there. See if u can drop the vocal sample and bring it back later. It sounds overused. Nice soulful track.

--Action Man-- I like the balance between the guitars and the strings. I really dig tha bridge when it comes in near the end.

--Tell Me Now-- This is a cool loop. But maybe figure out other ways to break up the monotony of the loop besides the vocal sample. Maybe change the drum pattern AGAIN. Don't think I ain't notice.

--ReUp--This track had some video game kind of sounds in it, which I'm hearing a lot more of now. I like how u use them for the bridge. The intro is 2 long and boring cut at least 10 seconds of it. Please consider switching up the percussion at the end since u have a drum solo goin on. Maybe bring back the hi hats with a different pattern or add some toms and crashes to bring the track to a better climax. If u don't want to do that I'd like to hear use of those video game synths stucatto style.

Overall I think that u have some solid tracks that I would like to hear the final versions of. Take care homie and keep makin' music.

really feelin the drums on this one... they really hold the whole thing together-- it's pretty abstract. I like the way it jumps around between the different samples, tho the one that gets repeated the most (chorus vocal or somethin?) gets a lil... repetitive. tite tho

that Logan is too hard! Nice drum & percussion work,
and the haunting samples set the atmosphere of the tune
nicely. A definate banger.

What kind of emcee would you picture on this, or did you
just build the beat to ride as a lone piece with no accompaniment?

Other than Logan i'm hearing the rest come through, dude you definate
have your own aesthetic and it sounds lovely... Kava is ill too!

That Logan beat is nice. I understand what that other person was saying about the one sample getting a little repetitive, but the drums are tight. That's really what keeps it going, in my mind. The drum sounds fit nicely into the mix and I like the way you flip the beat in a way to create a larger structure.

And then I happen to let the MySpace player keep going and that Kava beat is groovy as hell. The vocal samples in this one are embedded in the groove such that as soon as I here it, I'm anxious to hear it again.

You obviously have a good feel for what you want to do. It seems every beat I make sounds completely different and there's no thread connecting them all as being my own.
