96645, The 2012 Spilled Latte Awards: For Your Consideration
Posted by Frank Longo, Sun Jan-01-12 11:49 AM
Happy New Year, PTP!

As awards season starts crawling toward the finish line, it is important that we remember the most important award ceremony in the history of time: The Spilled Latte Awards!

TIMELINE:

Ballots can be submitted starting next week and ending at the end of the month.
The Awards Ceremony shall be *fingers crossed* Monday, February 6.

Now, in an effort to make sure the underdogs get as much attention on PTP as the favorites, a year or two ago we started doing a "FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION" post. It works the same way as the ads-- try and place your favorites into the minds of those who maybe haven't seen that movie or thought about it in a while, in hopes that the extra attention will motivate more people to see the film and vote for your favorite.

It's very simple: in the subject line, place the film, and if necessary, the performer. Reply to the category of your choice.

For example: under Supporting Actor, I'd write "Rob Brydon, The Trip"

etc.

I started seeing more movies I wouldn't necessarily have seeked out otherwise as a result of this post in the past (in particular, I always enjoy Sponge and ricky_BUTLER's suggestions). I strongly recommend if you have the time to do so as well. It will not only make your ballot better informed, but it will make you a happier human.

Let the Spilled Latte season begin!

96653, don't let the "artsy" vibe fool you - this flick is for everybody
Posted by Wordman, Tue Jan-03-12 10:41 AM
If you have any apprehension about seeing a black and white silent movie about the early 20th century - and believe me, I can understand why you would - let me assure you that you will enjoy this movie.

To speak on it's accessibility: when I went to see it, I was sitting across from 2 girls who were talking about who Charlie Sheen is dating and in front of a 40-year old man who: has never been on a plane (he was adamant about it), couldn't understand why he couldn't bring his beer into the cinema, and thought COWBOYS & ALIENS was a chick flick ("Because the girl saves the day." sigh). So when I tell you I saw this movie in a theatre full of "non-movie people," I mean I saw this movie in a theatre full of "Philly sports fans."
Every single one of them loved it.
The three people in question so loved it they would not shut up about it FOR FIVE BLOCKS.
Mind you, I don't know these people. Complete fucking strangers.

To speak on it's quality: Y'all have probably seen my previous post about the bar being lowered with movies this year. In short, the quality of films - how well they're made, how much skill and creativity they're made with - has gone down a lot. There is less than a dozen movies this year made with "a high-quality bearing." Not only is THE ARTIST one of them, it's the best of the year.

To speak on the experience: Even if you've already got your mind made up about awards for movies - go see this movie. Let's try to remember that movies are not competitions for year-end prizes. They're not sports. They're movies. They're made to be watched.
And there is no movie out now that greater rewards its viewer than THE ARTIST. It's fun and enjoyable without talking down to you. No movie more deserves to be seen in a cinema.

If you love movies, this is the movie to see.

A small scale mystery that's a lot more open to the world than that stupid mumblecore label might have you believe (the director previously made Dance Party, USA which is as mumbley as they come). Great cinematography and good performances don't hurt, and though they are relatively low key, there are twists and turns in the story which zip it along. Reminded me at times of Brick, though CW's more of a slow burner.
It's on Netflix Instant for those interested

I know she gets a lot of rep already, and this isn't a very showy role, but in a year when Bridesmaids* got treated by some as some kind of a feminist ode, I thought M Dub crafted an exceptionnally strong and realistic portrayal of a woman trying to keep moving without forgetting herself.

* nothing against that flick, it was fine (especially for a studio movie) but to see it revered by some because it only featured women was farcical

moving camera was too much for me. BUT, I see the purpose behind those stylistic choices and there are, without a doubt, some of the most stunning images I've ever had the joy of encountering in Malick's film. I definitely don't begrudge this kind of sentiment: "there's Lubezki's work in The Tree of Life....and there's everyone else."

My vote for now goes to either The Arbor or Mysteries of Lisbon. And the use of the 1.33 ratio in Meek's Cutoff is refreshing and was thematically justified (as is the cinematography of The Tree of Life). I've yet to see Shame. And haven't seen Hugo or Drive, either nor many of the most talked about films of 2011. So, my choices are from a small pool.

there were some excellent picks in either, which I actually have in my top 10 list (I typically don't make a distinction of genre)
96779, I'd be down if people are interested.
Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Jan-06-12 09:00 AM
Usually so few PTPers see enough foreign films and docs to make a ranked list of them that I hadn't thought of it. I guess I figured whatever was the most seen by people would be the auto winner.

Still, if people want to add those categories, I'm certainly game.
