Actor added to cast of Stallone's action film
By MICHAEL FLEMING

Mickey Rourke has joined the ranks of "The Expendables," joining the ensemble of the Sylvester Stallone-directed action adventure for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

Rourke will play an unscrupulous arms dealer who becomes the go-to guy for a group of mercenaries planning to topple a South American dictator.

Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture and Dolph Lungdren play the title characters. Forest Whitaker and Ben Kingsley are also circling the project.

The Stallone-scripted film begins shooting in March in Brazil. Avi Lerner, John Tompson and Kevin King Templeton are producing, with Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort exec producers.

In recounting his rise to Oscar contention with "The Wrestler," Rourke has credited Stallone for helping him get back in the business at a low ebb, when Stallone met him at a restaurant and gave him a role in "Get Carter."

Rourke is starring in "13," the Gela Babluani-directed remake of the French thriller "13 Tzameti," which also stars Statham, Ray Winstone, Sam Riley, 50 Cent and Ray Liotta.

94951, NEW UPDATE: 50 Cent is out! TERRY CREWS IS IN!
Posted by Melanism, Sun Mar-22-09 02:26 AM
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/40516

50 Cent is out! Who is in THE EXPENDABLES? Stallone says...

Hey folks, Harry here... It is Saturday, the second SXSW Saturday of the year - and yes, I'm about to head out to see more movies. It has been a wonderful, yet taxing week of cinema. But throughout this week - there's been the update on the casting of HALE CAESAR. For quite some time, the role belonged to Forest Whitaker, but a push in the schedule made it impossible for the Ghost Dog to continue with the film. Then I received a call, informing me that rapper, 50 CENT aka Curtis Jackson, had stepped into the role. Then Sly sent me an email regarding that casting, that I updated the story with. Well... today, I get woke up with a very enthusiastic call from Stallone, who has recast the role of Hale Caesar for a final (hopefully) time. So... who is Hale Caesar?

First off - he's 6'2 & a half" and BIG. He's a former San Diego Charger. He made his screen debut with Arnold Schwarzeneggar in THE 6TH DAY. And his most recent film will be this summer's Arnie-less TERMINATOR SALVATION. He is TERRY CREWS. Not necessarily a big name, but a big man to take his place among other big men. As I said, Sly seems very enthusiastic about this fella and I look forward to seeing what Terry Crews has in store for us.

Well Stratham wasn't big then but Arnold, Stallone and Lundren in one movie would've made me piss my pants.

But right now the only real draw in the cast is Mickey Rourke. And I guess Danny Trejo is always fun. But now it seems like another Righteous Kill-esque example of the right idea waaaaay after the right time ended. Sort of like the last Rambo movie.

But Stathan, Li, Lundgren, Stallone and (from what I hear) a cameo from Arnie - plus with Crews now settling into the role of the Law Enforcement officer, I really don't see how this could go wrong w/Stallone writing and directing.

Oh and BTW The last Rambo Movie was damned good!
94959, that last Rambo movie was tha SHIT

94960, I hope you not one of those snobby high-horse types
Posted by lexx3001, Fri Aug-13-10 09:32 PM
Because last RAMBO was THE ENTIRE SHIT! Watching human bodies turn into chopped liver in under 0.05 seconds was never more fun! and yet dude never went over the top, if anything, Sly's acting improved with age. And to put that cast together, dude is VERY smart, seing how our culture loves to flirt with nostalgia. I hope you were born after 1987. Then I can understand why you, naturally, would think its lame.
94961, CHARISMA CARPENTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey SZoners,

Here’s the latest from Sly:

I know that many people on the site have asked for Kurt Russell. I asked for him too. Actually, I was taken aback when asked to put the request in a letter and send it to his agent. Subsequently, I was called back by the agent several days later after refusing to send a letter and he said Kurt Russell is not interested in ‘ensemble acting’ at this time.

So, People, I came, I saw, I failed.

Best,
Sly
94965, wait, stallone refers to himself as Sly?

homie was like "send a letter??? wtf! yo! Kurt? what's really good my nig?"

94968, Just saw it
Posted by mrshow, Fri Aug-13-10 04:33 AM
I felt like there should have been a Cinemax logo in the bottom right corner of the screen for most of it. Some bizarre one-liners in it. Still, it's a shitload of fun. Audience was really into it. If you want to see shit explode, this is the movie for you.
94969, LOL

Aww hell nah...cgi blood???!

That's the worst!

Is Hollywood that damn lazy that they can't throw around a lil' red syrup.

I think for a while Sly was debating between PG-13 and R so may have added the blood later after he decided to go the R route. Glad he made this choice. Might have gotten a bigger audience but wouldn't be a true 80's action movie sendup without the blood.
94974, they didn't blow up enough REAL stuff.
Posted by SoWhat, Sat Aug-14-10 10:38 AM
too many CGI explosions.

other than that it was exactly what i wanted. big and stupid.

explosions gaLORE. i had a ball watchin this.

***************SPOILERS*****************

thoughts:
-not enough Dolph, and i was kinda chagrined he was cast as the antagonist (like he usually is) but at least he turns it around in the end.
-Rourke's lil emotional monologue seemed...random lol.
-the Arnie/Willis/Sly 3-way was VERY satisfying to finally see. that was cinema history right there folks.
-Eric Roberts has cornered the market for "smarmy slick bad guy".
-if only the other action classics woulda stepped up to the plate and joined in (Van Damme, Segal) this coulda been sumthn a lil more monumental. i feel like there was one wrestler too many in the mix, with too many wrestling moves reminding me that these guys are wrestlers. the main cast needed a few more action movie star icons to be present.
-some of the acting was beyond bad, speshly by Jet Li.
-i found myself lovin the rapport b/w Statham & Sly and can see why they got the most screen time: they can actually act.
-Charisma Carpenter ur still one hot bitch.
-speaking of, is Sly a fan of "Buffy" and/or "Dexter"? he's got Charisma in this movie ("Buffy"/"Angel"), the dude who plays "Angel" in "Dexter" (well that just got awesomely confusing) & Julie Benz ("Dexter"/"Buffy"/"Angel") was in "Rambo".

94978, cosign on everything you said,
Posted by DJ007, Sun Aug-15-10 03:11 PM
man I wish Segal and Van Damme where in this joint as well. Did you think Wesley would have been better than Terry in the part he played, I thought Wesley could have brought something interesting to the table but not sure if he would have been better than Terry Crews? But I could see Terry in that part more than Forrest Whitaker...lol

with Sly...

Also... agree on Dolph, he shouldve been fighting stallone not li! that wouldve been epic...

and I thought Terry Crews killed was one of the highlights of the movie

if there's another one i expect Segal, Van Damme, and/or Norris. with more Willis. and maybe Schwarznegger (sp?) since he won't be governor anymore.

and i loved it!

94987, so the fight camerawork wasn't bugging anyone else?
Posted by xangeluvr, Thu Aug-19-10 03:11 AM
the camera just seemed too damn close to see any of the fight moves. it was especially bad at the end when it was dark too.

still enjoyed the movie.
94988, It was fun, but it could've been more fun.
Posted by Coatesvillain, Thu Aug-19-10 08:44 AM
There was a lot of dragging. A lot of filler that took away from the rest.

I think the Eric Roberts and Vilena stuff worked really well. I think this movie would've been better if they just focused on it being simple and straight forward. Any and all depth they tried to add actually subtracted from the movie.

I wasn't a big fan of the cameras during the fight scenes either. Also maybe a little less CGI next time.
94989, Pretty much what I expected...
Posted by phenompyrus, Fri Aug-20-10 09:20 AM
And that was AWESOME!

The fight scenes did have shoddy camera work, but eff it, it was still entertaining as hell.

That whole sequence of the group in the tunnel, from Jet Li holding that dude and Staham breaking his neck backwards, to Stallone getting his ass kicked by Stone Cold, to Terry Crews mowing ppl down with his automatic shotgun, was fucking badass.

A sequel can only be better, filled with more ppl who turned Sly down the first time and other newbies. That list of action stars is long as hell to pick from...

after all the good will sly got off Rambo and Rocky Balboa he lost it with this

94992, they should have saved the basketball court scene for the end.
Posted by Cold Truth, Sun Aug-22-10 02:23 AM
that should have been the very last scene.

jet li should never, ever have scenes with him shooting a gun. ever.
cotoure cannot act for shit. too little dolph. wanted to see rourke box the shit out of someone, and didn't get it.

i have few complaints outside of that.

also, statham owned the whole flick. the best scenes were his- and i'll take his knives over rambos guns any day. he and sly had great chemistry though. rourke had an academy calibur monologue. the randy/austin fight was dope. kinda funny watching the rattler beat the shit out of rambo.

oh, and TERRY CREWS!!! that fucking cannon scene was awesome. even my girl marked out. eric roberts rocked until he gave a shitty monologue at the end.

oh and shouldn't jason have been doing all the driving? just sayin...
94993, The A-Team > The Expendables
Posted by Shelly, Mon Aug-23-10 09:52 AM
It was alright, more talk, less action especially for a cast of dudes known for action flicks.
94994, Just saw this, surprised so many people were satisfied with it...
Posted by Mole, Sun Nov-28-10 05:46 PM
... I thought the whole point of putting this cast together was to create a self-aware, "meta" action film, with winking references to past movies and purposely corny one-liners and stuff. Outside of the Arnold-Sly-Bruce scene -- which was neat but somewhat ruined by the trailers blowing the surprise -- it was pretty much a generic '80s throwback that actually took itself seriously and would've been exactly the same if it starred any random assemblage of actors. I mean, Stallone didn't even throw in a "I'm getting too old for this" moment to acknowledge that he looks like a reanimated, Botoxed and HGH-filled slab of meat.
94995, Stallone's face is downright upsetting
Posted by Mynoriti, Wed Aug-31-11 06:35 PM
he's in incredible shape but his eyebrows were a distraction to the point i can barely remember most of the movie.

and i watched it yesterday
