108865, I Want to Try a Drama Experiment.
Posted by iago, Fri Sep-19-08 02:00 AM
I'll name plays and musicals.
Respond in the appropriate place.
Tell us if you've seen it onstage, read it, or seen a film.
Then tell us your thoughts.

All the pieces I'll mention are major works of dramatic literature.
For clarity's sake, let me be the one to post new title, please.

108867, Film (Zeffirelli's version with Mel Gibson)
Posted by ZooTown74, Fri Sep-19-08 02:31 AM
It was cool

And of course, also read it in high school

My teacher in High School damned the Gibson one because it cut someone out (Fortinbras?) I can't remember. I liked reading it better than watching the film.

reserving self from making standard, knee-jerk response about Branagh's version being the best (I do seem to say that every time it comes up).

Posted by SoulHonky, Fri Sep-19-08 03:03 AM
A high school production and a small professional production. I'm a fan. I should probably look to make a rip-off modern version rather than actually trying to come up with my own ideas.
108877, read it, seen it several times, acted in it once,
Posted by janey, Fri Sep-19-08 02:17 PM
and the plan for my senior project was for me to direct Travesties and the other directing major direct TIOBE, in rep, using all the senior acting majors and design majors, but we couldn't get dates for the theatre, so we ended up just doing A Delicate Balance

108879, Saw multiple film versions and on stage.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat Sep-20-08 01:03 AM
When done right, it's hilarious. When not, it is ROOOOOOOOOUGH.
108880, I think it's the funniest play ever written.

108881, Belongs on the...

..."everybody does this play too damn much!!!" list (that's a post in and of itself). I actually can't count the number of times I've read it, seen the movie, and seen the productions.
It's to the point where there's really no need/reason to do it.

Preferred the film version over the TV one, don't know why

I think this is a play you can't do a bad production of. Even the worst production of it seems to be at worst "decent".

Mos Def, Jeffrey Wright

i liked it alot but i would have loved it if i'd seen with Don Cheadle in it. i was pleasantly surprised by Mos' performance tho. Jeff's brilliance goes without saying

I've gone on about a lack of quality in theatre, but this play is SERIOUS. Great work.
Excellent point about the Mos-and-Jeffrey show being a better show.

108925, Read the old version, seen the Chris Durang remake.

The old version is classic.

The Durang play, again, is really funny when done right, and really bad when not. The one I saw... was not.
108926, i saw a high school version starring my sister as medea.

108934, funny story about this one in Philly
Posted by Wordman, Thu Sep-25-08 11:20 AM
They did a production of this in Philly last season (apparently good, but it's best to reserve opinions when it comes to quality and Philly theatre), and there was a big push to get new, non-theatregoers to see it. They had this big article in one of the local papers about it - where they revealed the ending.
I was damn, cats can't win for losing can they?

Dope theater by the way. Decorated almost to the point of distraction ... during the production my eyes kept drifting up at that blue ass ceiling.

The show was good. I'm kind of a sucker for those 'new spin on an old story' types of tales and it didn't really disappoint in that respect. Acting and set design were on point. Music was good but didn't really stick with me for too long. Everyone else I was with loved the tunes though.
