29481, So who speaks for the Native Americans?
Posted by Soulbrotha, Mon Mar-28-05 03:45 PM
I was watching an abc documentary on the situation (high school killing) at boulder I think..somewhere in CO. Diff ppl were interviewed and it was sad to watch, older heads complaining that the kids are killing each other and are so far from their culture, not much efforts are being made to encourage the kids to stay in school much less learn their culture and its like they just left all of them in that place to just pretty much die.

Any thoughts, opinions?

I don't hear much about ppl speaking up for this group of ppl. Its so much black vs. white these days..where do the other minorities stand?

the reaosn why it's aoubt Balck and Withe is bcecause
Black is not the opposite of Light, it's th eOPPOSITE of light, in that sensing.

Ultimately nd abstractly that doesn't work, and in talkng about PEOPLE Black & WHite People can't be opposites because they have too much in common. BIOLOGY, SPIRITUALITY, ECOLOGY, etc,

They can be enemies and I suggest that sadly and fortunately they are enemies in 2005. And it aint just at okayplayer Activist. We're illuminating what's getting in the WAY of an End to White World Supremacy, more and more, IMO.

Whiteness is a system , in a world that is a victim of this system of White World Supremacy.

I don't speak for anyone else here that I know of, But when I say "Black" I'm talking about Anyone who can not pass for white according to the White Man.

(THAT includes Jews)

I am a WHiteboy. A White Man. and

I say "Black" to mean dark-skinned people in the sense that Brother Malcolm in his genius said it so "plain" ly:
CHINESE
ASIANS
BLACK, in that sensing
African-Americans
Blue-Black Afrikans
so-called "Primitive" societies
aboriginals
etc.

YOu get the picture that CAN paint a thousand worlds.

and DOES paint a thousnd worlds/words.

What you and I need to do is learn to forget our differences. When we come together, we don't come together as Baptists or Methodists. You don't catch hell 'cause you're a Baptist, and you don't catch hell 'cause you're a Methodist. You don't catch hell 'cause you're a Methodist or Baptist. You don't catch hell because you're a Democrat or a Republican. You don't catch hell because you're a Mason or an Elk. And you sure don't catch hell 'cause you're an American; 'cause if you was an American, you wouldn't catch no hell. You catch hell 'cause you're a black man. You catch hell, all of us catch hell, for the same reason.

So we are all black people, so-called Negroes, second-class citizens, ex-slaves. You are nothing but a ex-slave. You don't like to be told that. But what else are you? You are ex-slaves. You didn't come here on the "Mayflower." You came here on a slave ship -- in chains, like a horse, or a cow, or a chicken. And you were brought here by the people who came here on the "Mayflower." You were brought here by the so-called Pilgrims, or Founding Fathers. They were the ones who brought you here.

We have a common enemy. We have this in common: We have a common oppressor, a common exploiter, and a common discriminator. But once we all realize that we have this common enemy, then we unite on the basis of what we have in common. And what we have foremost in common is that enemy -- the white man. He's an enemy to all of us. I know some of you all think that some of them aren't enemies. Time will tell.

In Bandung back in, I think, 1954, was the first unity meeting in centuries of black people. And once you study what happened at the Bandung conference, and the results of the Bandung conference, it actually serves as a model for the same procedure you and I can use to get our problems solved. At Bandung all the nations came together. Their were dark nations from Africa and Asia. Some of them were Buddhists. Some of them were Muslim. Some of them were Christians. Some of them were Confucianists; some were atheists. Despite their religious differences, they came together. Some were communists; some were socialists; some were capitalists. Despite their economic and political differences, they came together. All of them were black, brown, red, or yellow.

The number-one thing that was not allowed to attend the Bandung conference was the white man. He couldn't come. Once they excluded the white man, they found that they could get together. Once they kept him out, everybody else fell right in and fell in line. This is the thing that you and I have to understand. And these people who came together didn't have nuclear weapons; they didn't have jet planes; they didn't have all of the heavy armaments that the white man has. But they had unity.

They were able to submerge their little petty differences and agree on one thing: That though one African came from Kenya and was being colonized by the Englishman, and another African came from the Congo and was being colonized by the Belgian, and another African came from Guinea and was being colonized by the French, and another came from Angola and was being colonized by the Portuguese. When they came to the Bandung conference, they looked at the Portuguese, and at the Frenchman, and at the Englishman, and at the other -- Dutchman -- and learned or realized that the one thing that all of them had in common: they were all from Europe, they were all Europeans, blond, blue-eyed and white-skinned. They began to recognize who their enemy was. The same man that was colonizing our people in Kenya was colonizing our people in the Congo. The same one in the Congo was colonizing our people in South Africa, and in Southern Rhodesia, and in Burma, and in India, and in Afghanistan, and in Pakistan. They realized all over the world where the dark man was being oppressed, he was being oppressed by the white man; where the dark man was being exploited, he was being exploited by the white man. So they got together under this basis -- that they had a common enemy.

I understand what you're saying and I think we're on the same page in a way but the truth of the matter is black is black and just that. Asians aren't black, Arabs aren't black and a bunch of the others you mentioned aren't black. To be black imo = of or pertaining to negroid descent.

Still, I'm more concerned with the other minorities or rather the lack of prominent speakers or ppl even in my community and as blacks as a whole speaking out on behalf of Native Americans and other such minority groups lost in the mix. I think its only fair that even on this board other aspects need to be brought to light.

I just feel sometimes its easy to forget that its not just one race vs. another race in the movement..

And when the last red man shall have perished, and the memory of my tribe shall become a myth among the white men, these shores will swarm with the invisible dead of my tribe; and when our children’s children think themselves alone in the field, the store, the shop, upon the highway, or in the pathless woods, they will not be alone.

I've heard that actually a lot of the beautiful words supposedly said by Cheif Seattle are unfortunately not anything he ever said.

Can anyone Clowningly and Aimlessly, in that sensing, find out if this is true? I'm too tired to look.

I have heard that too, but I cannot confirm, nor deny.
So, really, until it is proven, I am going to keep attributing some really good quotes that I have, to his name.

In North America, where the numbers of natives aren't many, current Native issues are not brought to light. Americans tend to think of Natives in the past tense, but never in present or future tenses. There is the Bureau of Indian Affairs that handles legal aspects such as land and hunting/fishing rights and federal recognition of tribes.
But it pretty much ends right there.
I can think of some Native actors who are also activists such as Russell Means or Steve Reevis, but most people don't know about them.
Global warming which is a very real issue that will eventually affect everyone is destroying the way of life for the Inuit in the Artic Circle of Alaska and Canada. There is no agriculture up there due to the harsh weather, so the main subsistence is the hunting of sea life. With the glaciers melting, cold weather adapted mammals are struggling to survive which leaves the Inuit way of life slowly coming to an end. They are very concerned with global warming and the continuation of their culture, but the government doesn't listen.

In my home state, the largest tribe is the Wampanoag of Mashpee who are still fighting to get federal recognition. It's really a sad story, because there used to be federally recognized a couple of centures ago, but a clerical era omitted them from the list of recognized tribes. Ramona Peters is an activist from this tribe, but again no one has heard of her.

About the high school shootings on the Red Lake reservation. The media jumped all over the Hitler thing but missed the most alarming details about this young man's life. He lost his father to suicide and his mother was handicapped in a car accident and unable to take care of him. Also, this young man suffered from depression. These are some of the most common issues plaguing reservations....suicide, depression, alcoholism and poverty. The only upside to this tragedy was finally a discussion about these issues, but the media hasn't taken the bait. Again, no one hears about this.

See...that's the sad thing about it. Even as blacks sometimes we tend to forget that there are other minorities that stand with us in the same movement.

My family tree consists of three groups that we know of: Escaped Slaves from Southern Mississippi.Freed Slaves from Virginia--my Mom's great-great grandmother claims to have met Abraham Lincoln when he visited a few plantations during the civil war..

and the last group: Chocktaw Indians--they're among the biggest native tribes in the south. There was a little intermarraige and when some slaves ranaway, certain tribes, chocktaw being one of them, actually accepted the runaways... "common enemies makes for common bonds" and all.

My take is that we don't talk much about Native Americans much because they're the conscience of the whole nation. They're victims of the first Genocide, a multi-century's long genocide at that, on this continent. The reason we prop up Columbus, Lewis and Clark, Thanksgiving, and even to a certain degree Black folks' struggles is because White folks want absolutely no part of a geniune discussion on genocide.

It's a lot easier to tell black people to shut up and get over it than it is to tell the cat who's grandparents got driven off his land so you could plant a flag in the name of manifest destiny or whatever.

I think a lot of black folks don't want to talk about Native Americans either because there's the fear that once again, our issues will be put on another back burner and we feel like we been in the back as it is...

It's a lot of guilt and self-interests, unfortunately.

By the way, one of the big reasons Africans were brought to the Americas is because the pilgrims, along with the British, French and Spanish empires basically ran thru all the indigenious people they could. Natives on the contintenal US, Hawaii, South and Central America were enslaved as long and in some cases, longer than Africans--at least in this part of the world.

It's an ugly mess, to be honest.

If black folks, Natives and hispanics and even asians ever got together... but where have we heard that "unity" crap before?
29493, It's often looked upon as a joke, but...

a lot African-Americans do have strong Native American ancestry and really don't acknowledge it that much. Maybe, since we're in a better position of influence, it would make sense to speak up for minority groups who don't have a voice, like Native Americans. Politics is a bitch though. What happened to the Native Americans(Any indigenous people for that matter) and how we were programmed to think of them (savages, animals, etc.) is probably the saddest story in world history.
