Everyone loves to say "they got fleeced!" "terrible deal!".

Clearly, talent wasn't the goal here, long term financial flexibility was. This is supposedly going net them 20 million in cap space come 2014. So they have two seasons in the lottery to hopefully land a couple of good young players, 3-4 picks that can be packaged and flipped, plus Turkey Glue comes off the books in two years which makes him highly tradeable in one. So 2014 gives them cap space to either land a star or add pieces to the young guys they draft in the next two years, if they turn out to be stars themselves.

There was NO deal out there that does anything that keeps them a middling team with an overpaid max guy (Brook, for example) eating up cap space. Is that really a better situation? Basically trading Dwight to be a 6-8 seed at ABSOLUTE BEST for 4 years is hardly better than the position they're in now. This gives them a ton of flexibility going forward. What's best for the organization isn't always just getting an equal player, and in this case long term financial flexibility to build from scratch is absolutely better than getting some players that aren't exactly going to take you to the semis.
