The Brooklyn deal was because there's something to sell the average Orlando fan. However, D12 repeatedly slandered the organization. He talked about the lack of support from the Magic. He talked about how they forced him to sign a deal. He lobbied hard to get to Brooklyn. However, Orlando would not fulfill his request because of his actions.

Orlando took the next best deal that put them in a place to succeed long-term. Initially he said he didn't want to go to LA. They shipped his ass there anyway.

For the record I'm happy the Lakers got D12. Kobe will beat a winning mentality into D12. I just hope D12 grows up.
