These niggas said fuck a big 3 and created a big 4. Still no excuses for Durant btw.
Sixers never thought they'd get Bynum, bynum and jason richardson for iggy, harkless, vucevic and a #1 guess it depends on if bynum reups broussard is already saying the sixers are #2 in the east now bwhahahaha

Denver is going to be tough in the west too, Iggy is a major upgrade over Afflalo

if howard's back gives him problems early on bynum should get a lot better getting a steady amount of shots down low from turner and jrue they got rid of elton brand too.... bynum will get ALL THE SHOTS HE WANTS 25 and 10 might fuck around and be a bad night for bynum next season.....

I like it though.
Not a big fan of Bynum, I think he's immature and lacks motivation, but I'll take this deal all day long.
Unlike a lot of Philly fans, I like Andre Iguodala, but this is a move we had to make. I'm happy. Shit, I'm thrilled.
But I still don't really care for Bynum, and I have a few reservations about him, but fuck it. This is a HUGE W for Philly.
|
97169, One totally unmad ?: what kind of extension can LA offer? Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Aug-09-12 09:59 PM
I'm not completely familiar with their current cap situation, but they'd *have* to ditch Pau to sign him for a worthy extension, yeah?
|
97170, doesn't matter, D12 isn't signing an extension Posted by D_Tox151, Thu Aug-09-12 11:17 PM
>I'm not completely familiar with their current cap situation, >but they'd *have* to ditch Pau to sign him for a worthy >extension, yeah?
makes the most sense for him to hit free agency and sign a max deal with the lakers. they can offer him aprox $25 mil more than the next team via bird rights.

I'd be nervous about having to pay Bynum max money at the end of this year.
Still, a good move for Philly.
|
97175, it's time for them to make a move Posted by rob, Thu Aug-09-12 10:15 PM
other than the lakers they're the only ones i like the deal for...they can be middling team forever rolling through dudes like that.
hopefully iggy doesn't sit in denver forever and gets on a squad with a star in the next few though.
|
97176, Yeah, I don't really love Iggy in Denver Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Aug-09-12 10:19 PM
But, shit, Afflalo and Harrington and a pick for Iggy is a no brainer for them. They could easily turn around and move Iggy at the trade deadline or before the season.
|

>I'd be nervous about having to pay Bynum max money at the end >of this year. > >Still, a good move for Philly.
This is perfect, give Bynum a yearlong tryout as The Man, when he beasts pay him more & he's staying.
If he flops (don't see it) you just cleared a bunch of money taking a shot at your first offensive presence at center since Moses Malone.
DEAL.
|
97180, Right? I never wanted Harkless to begin with Posted by icecold21, Thu Aug-09-12 10:37 PM
this is really a no lose situation for Philly, even in a worst case scenario where Bynum busts or walks.
Best move Philly's made since drafting GOAT
|
97181, Bank-In-Every-City Bynum ain't walking, if he's as good as I think Posted by Bombastic, Thu Aug-09-12 10:45 PM
he can be while being given the heavy lifting (40 miles from where he was born & raised) then he's staying and taking that extra damn year plus extra money.
If he flames out we've got another 20 or so million to play with the following season or can flip him on a more desperate team.
In the meantime we get to put our young guys in their natural slots and see what we've really got.
Both Thad & Turner have both been noticeably better when Iggy isn't there, let's see how that grades out over a full season with Bynum getting fed in the post like he's wanted to for awhile now.
We literally have been down so long that it looks like up to us, however right now we legitimately have a shot to turn the corner in a meaningful way.
This is a CAN'T LOSE proposition, thanks Orlando!
|
97182, Its EXACTLY what they needed to do, IMO they couldnt have done better Posted by icecold21, Thu Aug-09-12 11:03 PM
and it's exactly what I've been saying they needed to do.
Trade Iggy for a young star or cap room/draft picks, amnesty Brand, make room for Evan and Jrue to take over, and save money for a second star in 2014.
This is fucking PERFECT. I'm not a huge fan of Bynum, but he's still young and he gets what he wants, he's the go-to guy, so the chances of this working out are good. And if it doesn't, fuck it, we're no worse off.
I'm ecstatic.

Report: 4-team trade to send Dwight Howard to Lakers is 'complete'?

Are the Los Angeles Lakers about to win the summer of 2012 in spectacular fashion?
ESPN.com reported on Thursday evening that a 4-team trade involving the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets that would send Dwight Howard to the Lakers is "complete."
A source with direct knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com's Marc Stein the Lakers will receive Howard, the Denver Nuggets will acquire Andre Iguodala, the 76ers will receive Andrew Bynum and Jason Richardson, and the Magic will get Arron Afflalo, Al Harrington, Nikola Vucevic and one protected future first-round pick from each of the other three teams. In addition, the Magic will be getting other pieces, including 76ers No. 1 draft pick Moe Harkless, a source told Stein.
Acquiring Howard without giving up Pau Gasol would be a major coup for the Lakers, who earlier acquired point guard Steve Nash from the Phoenix Suns without sacrificing any major pieces of their 2011-12 team, which was eliminated in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Also Thursday evening, ESPN.com reported that a phone call with the NBA league office to "process" the deal had been scheduled for Friday morning and that Howard would not be agreeing to an extension with the Lakers as part of the deal, making him eligible for free agency next summer. Shortly thereafter, the Philadelphia Daily News confirmed the trade's details, noting that it could be completed as early as Friday morning.
Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reported on Thursday evening that the 4-team trade talks were "progressing" and that there was "guarded optimism" that the complicated "could be consummated," although the complicated, multi-team framework and past history of trade scenarios collapsing meant that this remains an exercise in caution. Berger also confirmed that Bynum would be sent to the 76ers in the "most likely scenario" and reported that Lakers Gasol would not be headed to the Magic.
Earlier Thursday, Yahoo Sports reported that the 4-way talks had opened but that a deal was " imminent."
Howard publicly requested a trade last season and even gave a list of preferred destinations to Magic management. He later underwent season-ending back surgery that forced him to miss the playoffs and Orlando opted to fire coach Stan Van Gundy and part ways with GM Otis Smith. In their place, the Magic hired Jacque Vaughn and Rob Hennigan.
Howard, 26, is a 6-time All-Star, 3-time Defensive Player of the Year, 5-time All-NBA first-team selection and 4-time All-Defensive first-team selection. He averaged 20.6 points, 14.5 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 1.9 assists, 1.5 steals and shot 57.3 percent from the field in 54 games last season.
Good job Lakers...keeping Pau was the key. I don't know who did better between Kupchak, Ainge, or Riley in the off-season
|
97189, Maybe they shouldn't have fired Otis. Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Aug-09-12 10:04 PM
What a fucking awful deal for the Magic. This is unbelievable.
Afflalo, Harkless, and picks? How could they not have gone with Houston's offer? It had to be better than that. Especially since they only got rid of Richardson and not any of their worse contracts.
Can't wait for "basketball reasons" to rear its ugly head.

97195, I would like to see the Sixers start Kwame and Bynum Posted by zigbfree, Thu Aug-09-12 10:14 PM
Fuck it, go big on everybody. Start the line up with: Holiday, N.Young, T.Young, Kwame, Bynum
Off the Bench: Turner, Richardson, Dorell Wright, Lavoy and Hawes
I think that's a pretty strong line-up. They probably wont be a top 3 team but at least they wont be a perennial 8th seed.
|
97196, Definitely don't want Nick Young in the starting lineup Posted by icecold21, Thu Aug-09-12 10:55 PM
Honestly, I don't even really want him on the team at all.
Evan has to start, Sixers need to find out if he & Jrue can be the backcourt of the future.
|
97197, I really doubt you want Kwame at PF Posted by Nodima, Fri Aug-10-12 12:07 AM
he's a good defensive Center but I'm fairly positive based on what I remember of him (and I honestly really like him for what I think he is, leaving the Lakers was really good for him) that you wouldn't want him roaming the perimeter with all these jump shooting PFs the league has these days.

not sure what it means if the elite teams do that small ball shit but those kind of match up problems should be enough to body most of the middle of the road and below type teams

97206, Magic GM should kill himself, thoughts on deal Posted by rjc27, Thu Aug-09-12 10:21 PM
This dude had so many options... this deal is so pathetic that you may as well just wait for free agency and torture him all year and let him walk...
The Nets deal shits on this... even for those who say Lopez isnt worth his deal, you could hold onto Lopez as a valuable asset and flip him at the deadline for something nice, plus have Brooks and the picks from Nets and more cap relief!!! Not to mention, if Lopez is averaging 20 and 8 on a playoff team next year, which he will if healthy, this guy is going to look even worse... every one of us in this thread should be mad right now that this dude somehow is an NBA gm and we are posting on okp. Lopez at least nets a nice young player and a first at the deadline this year, no doubt. so that's Brooks, plus 4 firsts, plus another good young player plus more cap relief. Or a 20 point 24 year old center and lopez and more cap relief and better picks.
Rod Thorn has pulled some sweet deals, this may top them all, iggy for bynum? wow, awesome fucking deal
Denver, I get it, Iggy upgrade over Afflalo but the Lakers were aging and declining, you almost took them out last year, why help this deal go down? Isn't the goal to ultimately win a title?
Lakers, I mean, ultimately they give up Bynum for Dwight Howard off back surgery and Dwight Howard not agreeing to extend yet, absolutely worth the risk. Even tho Im mad that the lakers get Howard, giving up Bynum is a fair trade off... Even tho, the Lakers give up ZERO PICKS AND TAKE BACK NO SHITTY CONTRACTS LOL. Mind boggling how some other teams in the nba can be this dumb, it's like these gm's want Kupchek to like them so they let him rape them
Dwight Howard should get boo'd everywhere he goes heavily... Lebron may make out biggest winner in this because right now the nba has real fans, then everyone else who watches who are frontrunners of LA or Miami, and most will gladly jump on Miami bandwagon now come finals time next June. Howard will not Leave LA for Dallas though because he will at least realize he will be loved there, while HATED elsewhere. fuck him and his back...
|
97207, Berger said that Denver shed 43 million in guaranteed money Posted by SoulHonky, Thu Aug-09-12 10:28 PM
As usual with a lot of mid-market teams, the deal had more to do with big money than the big picture for Denver.
|
97208, yea, I'm not REALLY blaming them at all Posted by rjc27, Thu Aug-09-12 10:33 PM
just worth mentioning that, especially to go along with ur point, when all fans are crying over lakers getting their way, it's teams like Denver who made it possible, because it is first and foremost, a business

97217, *GOES IN* Posted by Kira, Sat Aug-11-12 02:42 AM
The Heat's last ring don't count since we discrediting wins.
It doesn't count for all of the following reasons:
It was a strike shortened season.
All of the Heat's competitor's suffered season ending injuries in the playoffs.
The Big 3 all deserve lifetime achievement awards for acting and flopping.
It only took three superstars IN THEIR PRIME (c) Lebatard to win a chip and even then they needed help from the refs.
The Heat had to stack the deck, rig the table AND blackmail the competition.
The Heat didn't two or three peat.
Kobe/Shaq won the second Phil got there. The Heat took too long.
If Kobe needed Shaq and his rings don't count then none of Lebron's ever count.

Synonyms 1. lunatic, maniacal, crazed, crazy. 2. furious, exasperated, raging, wrathful, irate. 4. ill-advised; unsafe, dangerous, perilous. Mad, crazy, insane are used to characterize wildly impractical or foolish ideas, actions, etc. Mad suggests senselessness and excess: The scheme of buying the bridge was absolutely mad. In informal usage, crazy suggests recklessness and impracticality: a crazy young couple. Insane is used with some opprobrium to express unsoundness and possible harmfulness: The new traffic system is simply insane. 5. frenzied.
Antonyms 4. sensible, practical; sound, safe.
Usage note Mad meaning “enraged, angry” has been used since 1300, and this sense is a very common one. Because some teachers and usage critics insist that the only correct meaning of mad is “mentally disturbed, insane,” mad is often replaced by angry in formal contexts: The President is angry at Congress for overriding his veto.

That deal isn't much better though. They still suck with that deal. Brook is a bum, Marshon just shoots, and those picks would have been lame. Nothing fishy, the minute the Nets had to pay Lopez to keep him from other teams was the same minute their Dwight chances decreased.
|

Man...cut that shit out...lol...Brooklyn was offering a MUCH better deal....Not only were they giving away UNPROTECTED picks, but one of those picks were going to come from a shitty team...And they were going to take Richardson and another shitty contract off Orlando's hands...
This is not about being fishy...This is not a conspiracy....It's about Orlando having a horrible GM...You always take a scoring big men over a streaky SG...
Orlando made one of the worst deals I've seen in decades...Orlando deserves to be losers...

The best deal the Magic had was to let Dwight walk, and go from there. Both deals were ugly, and since the Nets couldn't trade Lopez until January they took this one. Wojo posted the Nets final offer a few minutes ago on twitter, and wasn't a dream. I would have let him walk, but NBA GM's are what they are. Neither deal was great IMO

What's the issue? Dwight Howard forced their hand, they thought they could persuade him to stay, the Nets had already resigned Lopez, so they took a bad deal. Sounds like NBA shit to me. I thought the Nets deal was bad, and I think this one is bad. A Magic fan on twitter talked me into not calling their GM an idiot. I would have let Dwight walk personally. I'm sorry, but neither deal was like the Melo deal.

U not getting it...
ORLANDO could have gotten a better deal....better draft picks, better players and they would have been able to unload more contracts...And Brooklyn was that team...
This is not the typical NBA shit....lol...This is just an organization making a horrible deal...
No one expected Orlando to get equal value for Howard...U rarely do in the NBA...But this? This was just bad business, especially when you had a better deal already in your grasp...
Orlando = Losers.....And stupid I might add....

All those players leave in this deal. In that Deal they would have taken back Lopez, Brooks and 4 1st rounders. He didn't specify where they came from, but it didn't seem a like a terrible team was providing them. Which is why I'm saying I wouldn't have taken either deal. I'm sorry I don't see how that deal makes them much better. Again the best deal the GM had was letting him walk in the summer >This is not the typical NBA shit....lol...This is just an >organization making a horrible deal... >
Yea well they've always made terrible deals though. They're cursed.

97274, RE: Sooooo Posted by murph71, Fri Aug-10-12 12:32 AM
It's just a bad deal...
And then add to the fact that they (Brooklyn) had the Bobcats (or) Cleveland involved to give up a REAL 1st round draft pick to Orlando to go along with those other draft picks in the deal...
It's just bad all around...NBA GM's are reportedly baffled by this deal...Again, quite possibly the worst trade ever made...
|
97275, RE: Sooooo Posted by kwemos, Fri Aug-10-12 05:48 AM
Well yea it's a horrible deal. I just don't understand acting like the Nets were offering Westbrook/Ibaka or something. They were offering 2 average players, and late draft picks because the Bobcats/Cavs backed out. We might not be having this convo if the Nets didn't trade for Gerald Wallace.

>Well yea it's a horrible deal. I just don't understand acting >like the Nets were offering Westbrook/Ibaka or something.
Nah...that was never the point...But I would always take an offensive minded big man over a streaky SG anytime...I would also rather take unprotected picks over protected picks...
>They were offering 2 average players, and late draft picks because >the Bobcats/Cavs backed out. We might not be having this convo >if the Nets didn't trade for Gerald Wallace.
A Big man that averages nearly 20 points a game is not average...We can make jokes about Lopez all day, but a lack of true big men in the league increases his value...If Lopez was playing in the era of say Ewing, Dream, O'Neal and the like, then yeah, you would have a point...
The irony is, Cleveland backed out because people were balking that they were helping Brooklyn get Howard (after Cleveland's owner Dan Gilbert bitched and moaned about small market teams not being able to keep their franchise players and the thought of super teams...he got cold feet...)
All this to say, Orlando fucked up....
|
97278, RE: Sooooo Posted by kwemos, Fri Aug-10-12 09:30 AM

97284, Orlando did not believe Lopez to be a max contract player... Posted by Warren Coolidge, Thu Aug-09-12 11:36 PM
I might have taken that deal, but from what I'm reading...the Magic would have preferred Bynum over Lopez (oh yeah...plus they were not at all willing to over pay for Humphries)
but unfortunately for the Magic, Bynum preferred giving the Sixers more assurances that he'd re-up..
Maybe the Magic should hve taken that trade..the 3 #1s would have been great....but from their perspective they had a reasonable risk of having over paid for guys who get hurt or are overrated in Lopez and Humphries.... they are still getting 3 #1s, but they are gonna be 1 each from the other 3 teams involved which is better than getting 3 picks from 1 team.

i'm sorry... too much justification listed above here for getting a poo poo platter deal. It still doesn't make sense.

97286, RE: Orlando did not believe Lopez to be a max contract player... Posted by murph71, Fri Aug-10-12 12:04 AM
It's one thing to be happy that your team got over, homie...GREAT deal for the Lake Show...
But let's chill with downplaying that Brooklyn deal...Orlando just happens to be a horrible franchise that deserves to take L's for the rest of their existence...
|
97287, not downplaying the Nets offer....just providing a more factual context Posted by Warren Coolidge, Fri Aug-10-12 12:40 AM
it's gonna be easy for conspiracy theorists to claim that Orlando got a flagrantly better deal and turned it down just to help the Lakers...
the fact is that that in hindsight it may have been a better deal...but the fact was that Orlando held out on that deal...partially to see if it would get better, but also partially because that is exactly where Dwight wanted to go...in their same conference to add to it..
and yes... they had reservations about being obligated to maxx out Lopez and over pay for Humphries to keep them...because if you don't keep them, you got nothing for Howard...
that ship sailed because Orlando had reservations about that deal..
this deal honestly became the only other deal they could get. Dwight was only gonna re-up with Brooklyn...and the only team that was in a position to trade for him without him agreeing to re-up before hand was the Lakers...
that left the Lakers as the only destination choice..
sure the reasoning may have been bad.......but in the end they had no choice....
if they take that deal and Lopez continues to get hurt and/or turns into just and average center that you're paying maxx money too.... that would have destroyed their franchise potentionally...
there was risk to the Nets deal....in hindsight it may have been better than the Laker deal..but it had risks.

97314, Brooklyn's Deal Was Better Though Posted by RexLongfellow, Thu Aug-09-12 11:51 PM
The new GM was adamant about getting picks, and Brooklyn gave up 4 unprotected picks. This one all the picks are protected. Plus, the players they are getting are about a wash to what Brooklyn was giving up (actually, Brooklyn's players were better)
Honestly, every deal they were offered was better

|
97317, RE: lol @ this 'worst GM ever' over-reactionary shit Posted by murph71, Fri Aug-10-12 08:13 AM
I don't care if he's a newbie...it was a horrible deal...if this deal came out the blue that would be one thing. But there were other deals already on the table. My issue more than anything are the protected draft picks Orlando is receiving. To me that's a terrible blunder. Is it hyperbole saying that the young dude is the worst NBA GM ever? Maybe. But considering that they complained about the other deals that Brooklyn and the like were offering...But then they turn around and make this horrible deal? Its laughable...But props to the Lakers and Philly...and Denver didn't do too bad either...

97332, My point is this: Posted by Kira, Fri Aug-10-12 02:04 AM
The Brooklyn deal was because there's something to sell the average Orlando fan. However, D12 repeatedly slandered the organization. He talked about the lack of support from the Magic. He talked about how they forced him to sign a deal. He lobbied hard to get to Brooklyn. However, Orlando would not fulfill his request because of his actions.
Orlando took the next best deal that put them in a place to succeed long-term. Initially he said he didn't want to go to LA. They shipped his ass there anyway.
For the record I'm happy the Lakers got D12. Kobe will beat a winning mentality into D12. I just hope D12 grows up.

Exactly why I don't buy deal either deal being better than the other. If they lost out on shedding both Hedo and J Rich I would call them really stupid. As it stands they're just stupid. Both deals were ugly and draft lottery enabling.

97359, Neither the Lakers nor Heat are MORE talented-- they're differently talented. Posted by Frank Longo, Fri Aug-10-12 07:27 AM
Nash/Kobe/anyone/Pau/Dwight vs. anyone/Ray/Wade/Bron/Bosh? That's an interesting matchup as LA has the more traditional lineup going small to big-- they'll run half court and Miami will just want to run. Pau/Dwight should discourage Bron/Wade from just driving to the rim willy nilly... it's a very interesting matchup development, subjectively speaking. If the Heat effectively keep the game fast and transition-based, the Show can't hang. If the Lakers slow the tempo, I'm not sure the Heat can hang. Injuries will obviously play a big part too... should be a great year.
For these two teams anyway. For everyone else it'll probably suck.

knicks didnt have a PG til 8 weeks into the season...
were missing both Melo and Stat for large chunks of the season...
had 0 depth in the front court, their +/- numbers w/ w/o Chandler were night and day...almost 0 depth at PG...
Knicks NOW have
Kidd/Felton at PG Smith/Brewer at SG Melo/Novakaine at SF Stat/Thomas/Camby/Chandler handling PF + C
not to mention Shump when he comes back...

Lawson could become a 20 and 7-8 PG, already a 17 and 7 guy Gallinari using that passing game more Faried real good McGee focused is scary .. won't be relied on night in night out but will do ok. Iggy ...the best defensive perimeter forward without the initials LJ, great passer, can score Chandler a scoring threat off the bench Miller a VERY decent off the bench PG and Don't forget a couple decent 10 min a game centers in Koufos and i guess Mozgov..
Hope they start: Lawson, Iggy, Rooster, Faried, Koufos and then McGee playing 25-30, Miller 15-20, Chandler 20-25..

during the trade deadline they could have had the Nets 1st round pick that ended up going for Gerald Wallace AND the Nets 1st they had from Houston that ended up going for Joe Johnson... plus a few more picks, plus Marshon Brooks, plus Humphries expiring, plus getting rid of all shitty contracts...
|
97435, Crazy thing is...the Magic got back-to-back #1 overall picks Posted by Warren Coolidge, Fri Aug-10-12 11:50 AM
with Shaq and Penny...
but the entire reason why there was ever a lottery in the first place is because of the Lakers. The trades that the Lakers did in with Utah and Cleveland for future first round picks that eventually turned into Magic Johnson and James Worthy..... The league eventually chose to go with a lottery system to give variation to the top draft order and making it less likely that a team that was already solid would be able to make a deal with a bad team that would result in the top pick..
the Lakers signing Shaq as a free agent resulted in changes to the salary cap after that in an effort for the league to make it more difficult for a team to sign a big money free agent from another team....if you look at the history of the league, game changing free agency signings and trades have always resulted in the league making changes to make it more difficult for it to happen in the future...
Now the league blocks the Lakers getting Chris Paul.....and the Lakers go to plan B and C by tradeing draft picks for Steve Nash, and trading Drew Bynum for Howard, Duhon and Clark...
One thing to learn from all of this is that a team like Orlando...or a team like Cleveland..... when you have your chance to win titles...you got to finish the job...because if you don't..those young players are going to leave.... If Shaq and them beat Houston...Deisel probably would have never been a Laker.....had Lebron and the Cavs won the title...Bron would probably still be in Cleveland...if Howard and them had won a title with the Magic...he probably would have wanted to leave..
when you get your chances..you got to take em..
|
97436, you are delusional... Posted by FromTheGo, Fri Aug-10-12 06:00 PM
The reason they tried to put large contracts in check was because of KG.
The only conspiracy part of my post was that Orlando mat have been promised some advantages to giving the Lakers a deal and nixing BK.
It wasn't coincidence that Orlando got two first's in the 90's and got their Blue Chips.
LA still has to win games and it will be interesting to see who is their post scorer now that Bynum is gone.

|
97451, It's hilarious that people still think all trades are talent based. Posted by lc ceo, Fri Aug-10-12 11:53 AM
Everyone loves to say "they got fleeced!" "terrible deal!".
Clearly, talent wasn't the goal here, long term financial flexibility was. This is supposedly going net them 20 million in cap space come 2014. So they have two seasons in the lottery to hopefully land a couple of good young players, 3-4 picks that can be packaged and flipped, plus Turkey Glue comes off the books in two years which makes him highly tradeable in one. So 2014 gives them cap space to either land a star or add pieces to the young guys they draft in the next two years, if they turn out to be stars themselves.
There was NO deal out there that does anything that keeps them a middling team with an overpaid max guy (Brook, for example) eating up cap space. Is that really a better situation? Basically trading Dwight to be a 6-8 seed at ABSOLUTE BEST for 4 years is hardly better than the position they're in now. This gives them a ton of flexibility going forward. What's best for the organization isn't always just getting an equal player, and in this case long term financial flexibility to build from scratch is absolutely better than getting some players that aren't exactly going to take you to the semis.
|
97452, I get it, I just think shit's busted if teams are incentivized to tank Posted by celery77, Fri Aug-10-12 12:24 PM
it makes being the fan of a small market team very, very tedious after a while.
"you're small market and your team lacks a AAA superstar? well tank, ship out any good players you have to save coin till you catch your white whale, and enjoy watching the Lakers deep runs into the playoffs while you scour the news on nbadraft.net."
and yes, I know the owners lacked the balls to really re-imagine how they're doing business and instead just threw a tantrum to get some more $$$ flowing back to them. that's why I've increasingly soured on the league.
|
97453, You really can't play the "poor small market teams" card with this. Posted by lc ceo, Fri Aug-10-12 12:37 PM
>"you're small market and your team lacks a AAA superstar? >well tank, ship out any good players you have to save coin >till you catch your white whale, and enjoy watching the Lakers >deep runs into the playoffs while you scour the news on >nbadraft.net."
I can appreciate your bitterness toward the Lakers, lol. But that's not what this is. This about a team who paid out big money to players who flat out weren't worth it, said player got sick of it, and decided to bounce. Shard got a massive contract, and they flipped that bloated contract for Hedo and Gil and THEIR bloated contracts. They paid Gil to go away and then they overpaid for JRich, who is clearly on the decline. KG and Lebron are the absolute benchmark for situations like this, where a team languishes in mediocrity due to management, and the player finally says "You know what, FUCK YOU GUYS, I'm out." You can only do that shit for so long.
Orlando is a mess, and this particular deal sets them up as well as possible going forward. This arguably benefits them more than keeping D12 because they have no real flexibility to improve until next year at the earliest. This gives them a clean slate to start with and hard time frames to look at to plan their future.
>and yes, I know the owners lacked the balls to really >re-imagine how they're doing business and instead just threw a >tantrum to get some more $$$ flowing back to them. that's why >I've increasingly soured on the league.
I don't understand this. The league was fucking fantastic this year. You'll always have some dumbass front offices, but this last season was easily the best overall in recent memory for a multitude of reasons. There was a lot of great basketball this year and truth be told, it only looks like it's getting better.
|

I don't care that Dwight Howard got traded. it's just ridiculous that trading a potentially top 3 talent in the NBA, guaranteed 50-win player, nets you "cap relief for 2014 and a chance at landing a player to be named later." that sucks for Orlando fans. that does NOT make me want to buy a ticket to go to the arena.
>I don't understand this. The league was fucking fantastic this >year. You'll always have some dumbass front offices, but this >last season was easily the best overall in recent memory for a >multitude of reasons. There was a lot of great basketball this >year and truth be told, it only looks like it's getting >better.
cuz I'm not a front-running punk like some, I turn on the NBA primarily for the Blazers + Warriors, which is rarely an opportunity to watch my team win anything more than a 5-8 seed at best, and I detested the basketball league-wide last year because the effect of lockout-shortened schedule was evident in every game.
and my best friend that I get together with on every opening night + big playoff game to watch NBA is a Phoenix fan, who has nothing to be excited about next year and likely will have to avoid every ESPN broadcast cuz Nash in LA just fucking sucks too much to watch.
and that's fine, I get that's how the league works, not mad at all at the Lakers for maximizing their advantage, just responding to the idea that "this is a good trade for the Magic because it clears up logistical management problems" would NOT make me excited as a Magic fan and is just another reminder to all the small market, cold weather fans that cheering for their local team is just an exercise in hoping you'll get to briefly watch a star before he finds ultimate success elsewhere. the end.
|
97455, the problem with this is Posted by Rjcc, Fri Aug-10-12 02:00 PM
the reason he's not staying is b/c of the poor management decisions, not b/c of small market.
he didn't make them draft fran vasquez, being in a small market didn't make them draft fran vasquez. it didn't make them overpay to keep jameer nelson it didn't make them draft, resign and never ever play ol boy from duke etc.
they made this bed and it is their own. fault.
detroit is no major media market anymore and when we were winning, we got guys who could play at reasonable prices. we're not winning now b/c of a bunch of decisions that the front office made all on their own.

if you have a top 3 talent, guaranteed 50-win / couple pieces away from a contender player, it shouldn't be a situation where dealing that asset nets you primarily cap savings and people call that a reasonable trade. that's fucked up. that's broken. and they need to tweak things to fix it.
|
97459, what can they do? the trade happened Posted by Rjcc, Fri Aug-10-12 07:24 PM
bc dwight threatened that he was willing to take less money to choose his own team in free agency. there's really nothing you cna do to stop that other than restrict player free agency.
if the magic wanted to keep him, maybe they should've kept him from knocking up that team dancer.

97460, lotta things they can do, but missed their chance being greedy w/ CBA Posted by celery77, Fri Aug-10-12 07:34 PM
they just wanted money with that lockout shit. if they were serious about "competitive balance" crap, they woulda come up with something better. instead we just get more of the same, only with more money going back to the owners.
it's cool, I get it. every time a team hits middle, but not top, they'll go through the process of blowing the team up to clear cap + stockpile draft picks, put their fans through shit for 2-3 years while they do it just like we're used to. I'm getting increasingly bored of it, though, b/c the Brons + D12s of the world have proven that players have the real power and can go where they want. great for certain teams. pretty tiring if you're not one of them.
|
97461, bron and D12 SHOULD have the power. Posted by Rjcc, Fri Aug-10-12 08:02 PM

97462, Let's just start here: Posted by lc ceo, Sat Aug-11-12 01:38 PM
>if you have a top 3 talent, guaranteed 50-win / couple pieces >away from a contender player, it shouldn't be a situation >where dealing that asset nets you primarily cap savings and >people call that a reasonable trade. that's fucked up. >that's broken. and they need to tweak things to fix it.
Let's start here:
1. Show me all the teams with really good players on them, the kind of players and assets that you would consider valuable enough to warrant trading Dwight for.
2. Those teams are pretty much ALL playoff teams. So, lets weed out all the ones that are willing to gut their team to land Dwight. Then, let's look at the ones that are willing to GAMBLE on him resigning.
Who's on THAT list?
3. You really don't consider the front office and their vision at all.
So, if you have the following choices:
-Trade him for financial flexibility and the ability to start from scratch?
OR
-Field a middling team that will be a low playoff seed, little to no financial, and no REAL shot at gaining ground on being a legit title contender?
Scratch is a no brainer. Instead of being forced to work on the fly in a situation that all but promises mediocrity, why wouldn't the obvious choice be to start all over and have a clean slate?

97498, Didnt know he might not be ready to start the season Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Sat Aug-11-12 08:01 AM
this is speculation but ive assumed all along hed be good come Oct 30
Dwight Howard was introduced at a press conference in Los Angeles on Friday night. Dwight genuinely looked happy during the press conference and tried to have a good time by doing an impression of Kobe Bryant. The 26-year-old center shared that there's no timetable for his return and his health is "good." He also mentioned that it was up to the doctors to decide on his eventual return. Howard did not address the possibility of a contract extension and he ended his conference in appropriate fashion by saying, "thank you guys for putting up with me. It’s going to be better." But as for when Howard will be healthy enough to play after back surgery, at this point Christmas Day seems like a reasonable target date.
|
97499, RE: Dwight Howard is a Laker...... Posted by all stah, Sat Aug-11-12 11:40 AM
Have a funny feeling that Mark Cuban might get the last laugh. Lakers taking on Dwight without doing it through a sign and trade is just suicide.
Mark Cuban gave out mostly one year deals, so that he will have an immense amount of cap space after next season, so if the lakers are not potent next year, and the entire concept goes to shit, Dwight will jump ship.
Plus he cannot be trusted. Dude is an asshole, and is very, very self-centered. He's going to make Shaq look like Wayne Brady.....
Mike Brown, Howard, Kobe, Peace, and Gasol ..all on the same team?....That shit could turn into a personality clash, cluster fuck.
No hate. No mad-o.

The fact that he went without a sign and trade is crazy in itself...I don't even think it is about money with this dude, because orlando was willing to give him tons, but he just didn't want to play in orlando anymore...
this could turn into a nightmare for the lakers, even if they do resign him..they will be capped like shit ....lotta huge ass contracts on the books for an old ass team ....

He's going nowhere.
I wish you were correct in your doomsday scenario but unfortunately you're not.
You don't have to like the Lakers (lord knows I don't, mostly because of Kobe but also now Dwight) but people should respect their gangster by now. They didn't get here being stupid & Cuban is a fly on the wall to them.
Dallas has zero to offer Dwight Howard in free agency: less money, lesser roster, inferior city, less marketing opportunities, etc.
Cuban crapped out on this one.
|
97506, RE: I mean, he's a Laker & will be there long-term, he is now the bridge Posted by all stah, Sat Aug-11-12 01:57 PM
dude you are nuts.
Owners are going to feel the weight of the luxury tax, including the lakers, and the fact that the lakers hold howard's bird's right, they can go over the salary cap to sign howard......and I don't think that is a good thing because of the other 80 mil( their salary cap) that they are going to have to deal with
You do realize howard will be 27 this year, meaning he will just be 3 years away from 30 going into a big time long deal contract.....plus he is a player with back issues ..He is supposed to be be the future?
come the fuck on.
Bomb wake the fuck up. This entire situation has the potential to turn into a shit storm.
Cuban was the smartest owner this past summer ..why?...because he basically told williams to go fuck himself, which is why he didn't show up to meet him during his visit. Cuban wasn't going to pay 75 mil, and he let a lot of old ass players walk: terry, kidd .....and the mavs got younger with most of the contracts being one and done.
cuban is a fly on the wall?
mav's salary cap:
2012/2013: 59 mil 2013/2014: 24 mil
NIGGA PLEASE!
mavs will have so much loot to attack free agency and go after chris paul and other big free agents....lakers are limited to Dwight Howard . They are screwed for the next three years cap wise.
don't ride on this one, fam ...don't do it....

better because since bynum was the 2nd best center in the league the lakers had a huge advantage in the front court every night anyway and only slightly improved that advantage with a defense for offense trade off then he said something about the thunder still being better and the celts having to worry about the sixers now
iono if he's just trying not sound scared but with statements like that and many analysts/tv heads STILL picking miami (or okc) it seems like the league doesn't see this as big of a deal as it is niggas really believing that small ball don't need big men thing? wasn't anthony davis just drafted #1? lakers basically have a dream team for their starting 5 now foh
|
97514, RE: doc rivers was on espn radio saying the lakers didn't get that much Posted by all stah, Sat Aug-11-12 12:14 PM
Personally, I see it as an overrated move because of who Howard is. He's an under-achiever, and he comes from the same cloth that yielded vince carter and allen iverson ...the "you're no winner"cloth.
Plus the lakers are still very, very old.....an old nash, an old kobe, an old peace, and an old gasol ..an old bench in jamison.....Against the fire and speed of westbrook, durant, harden, and ibaka, plus they just added an extremely talented player in jones?..
Lakers are too old in key places.
I wish lakerland well, but there is no easy way out in this one....
|
97515, how is it a trade off on offense? Posted by Kungset, Sat Aug-11-12 01:10 PM
dwight is an improvement on offense. bynum just had his career year and he averaged 18 points, dwight averages more year in and year out, more efficiently too.
|
97516, Bynum's a more skilled offensive player, surely you can't Posted by Bombastic, Sat Aug-11-12 01:42 PM
start talking about averaging 18 on a team where Kobe shoots more than the two big men combined a lot of nights can you?
Dwight is not a strong offensive player & his foul shooting is yet another thing he bit from Shaq.
He's a better fit for the Lakers because he's a better all-around defender, rebounder & trashman plus he's a bona fide Top 3-5 player overall.
But Bynum long since eclipsed him in terms of post moves, touch & the other things you associate with being a 'first option' on that side of the ball (luckily for Dwight he doesn't have to be in LA, which is why they'll likely be a title team next year).
|
97517, kobe probably got a hundred more "moves" than bron Posted by Kungset, Sat Aug-11-12 01:54 PM
but who's a better offensive player at this point?
and we'll see how bynum does as a first option without pau and kobe around. he has a LOT of problems with the double team.
|
97518, I think he'll be just fine without Kobe chucking & Pau/AB never meshed Posted by Bombastic, Sat Aug-11-12 03:51 PM
I'll take Bynum's post offense as the focal point over running it through HGH He-Man The Garbageman on that end.
|
97519, Bynum moves like a WNBA center Posted by d., Sat Aug-11-12 06:30 PM
I've never really been impressed by his "skill." he's just big enough and "good enough" in an NBA that lacks solid 7 footers
Dwight destroyed Bynum in damn near all of their matchups:
http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/h2h_finder.cgi?request=1&p1=bynuman01&p2=howardw01
(smfh @ Dwight only averaging 8.6 FG a game in the Finals)
I think it's obvious that DH's development was hampered by SVG's 3-point-happy offense. it was a common occurrence to see Goomba, et al jack up jumpers when they should've thrown it to 12 in the post

97522, just to clear up any concerns about the chances Dwight leaves next year Posted by LBs Finest, Sat Aug-11-12 03:09 PM
let me get this straight.... he's gonna sign a 4 year, $87 mil contract with a Mavs team that, by the way, will have around 37 mil in guaranteed dough committed to 5 guys, leaving enough cap space to squeeze in D12's max deal but almost nothing else, and thats only if they rescind their qualifying offers to Beaubois and Collison and let them walk. so they'll be capped out with a roster of Howard, Dirk, Marion, Mayo, Jared Cunningham and Jae Crowder. that squad might not even make it out the first round, let alone compete for a title.
he's taking that over a 5 year, 118 mil deal to stay in sunny LA? where all the Hollywood endorsements are? where he's set up for success in the short term with Kobe, Nash, and Pau, and long term when everyone's contracts comes off the books in 2 years and Mitch will have cap space to build around him?
oh and to top it all off his fiance lives in LA, born and raised.
lol shit i'll call that bluff....that nigga aint going NOWHERE.
|
97523, RE: just to clear up any concerns about the chances Dwight leaves next year Posted by all stah, Sat Aug-11-12 03:16 PM
He could have made more than that in Florida, as well as Brooklyn....aint shit a shoe in with that dude..
The fact that it wasn't a sign and trade with one of the greatest franchises in sports should tell you that....
I don't think it is a about money with that dude, and dallas could easily pull a miami heat, by getting chris paul and howard to take less to play with each other ....not out of the question.
And again we are talking about Mark Cuban here who treats players like kings....who does not want to play for Mark Cuban?....only reason Williams signed with the nets is because he felt mark didnt really want him, and mark didn't.
Players don't get rid of mark...mark gets rid of players....terry,kidd, nash, tyson..
As long as Howard is not signed, you should be worried ....yall can't say shit until he signs. ..period.
If he does not sign, yall are literally fucked ....no other way about it...literally fucked, and I still think you guys are fucked even if he does sign
yall got 8 years out of shaq .....yall will not get that out of howard, and yall's entire team is old as fuck. plus yall got the biggest salary cap in the league ...
OKC is like damn near under the salary cap with a young ass championship squad.

what the hell are you talking about? it wasn't a sign and trade because he's not a free agent, and he's not gonna sign an extension NOW because thats not smart. 3 year extension with LA now or a 5 year deal with LA in 2013? which makes more sense financially?
> >I don't think it is a about money with that dude, and dallas >could easily pull a miami heat, by getting chris paul and >howard to take less to play with each other ....not out of the >question.
maybe you didn't read my post, Dallas will barely have enough money for one max deal, how can they afford both of them? unless CP3 and Dwight are willing to only make like 11 mil each next year, which obviously has no shot in hell of happening. >As long as Howard is not signed, you should be worried >....yall can't say shit until he signs. ..period. > >If he does not sign, yall are literally fucked ....no other >way about it...literally fucked, and I still think you guys >are fucked even if he does sign
lol you are a character.
> >yall got 8 years out of shaq .....yall will not get that out >of howard, and yall's entire team is old as fuck. plus yall >got the biggest salary cap in the league ...
please go back and read post #357.
> >OKC is like damn near under the salary cap with a young ass >championship squad. > >FOH
OKC is actually over the cap right now and next year they'll be at 49 mil BEFORE having to sign Ibaka and Harden, to long term deals. if a team was willing to offer Eric Gordon a max deal you know Harden will get offered the same. if OKC keeps him they are over the cap, and who knows what some team will offer Ibaka, thunder will probably only get to keep one of them.

Damn you are not to bright, and you are delusional.
I just said that Howard did not do a sign and trade, so why are you following up with the same info?..learn to read.
And you are wrong about OKC, right now they are under the salary cap at 56 mil: http://hoopshype.com/salaries/oklahoma_city.htm
And they will be at 36 million after next season, with more than enough money to sign both harden and ibaka, but with the great pick up of perry jones, a player who can play PF and SF, team wise they are in great position.....
The lakers however are fucked with salaries at 97 mil for the upcoming year, where old, old players are taking up most of the salaries
pau:32 nash:38 kobe: 34 peace:32 jamison: 36
http://hoopshype.com/salaries/la_lakers.htm So, after next season, considering howard isn't sign by then, lakers salaries will be at 78 mil. Howard will command around 20-25 mil a year, so the lakers' cap will go back up to around100 mil, with no youth in sight until 2014/2015, where howard will be approaching the 30 year old mark with a back issue.
The Lakers have to play with old ass players for the next two seasons.
You have no idea how much you guys are gambling right now, because you guys have yet to get younger, and even if you do sign howard he will be an old guy for you in the next 3 years. .....so where is the youth movement? and how do you guys expect to win now with an old ass group of players?
Kobe talked about not turning into the pistons after they lost their championship to the bulls. They basically faded into oblivion, but they did that because they got old, which is what the lakers are doing getting old.
You traded a 24 year old for a soon to be 27 year old, who will be 30 in three years, and you have to hang on to your old, old ass players for the next 2 seasons......
you niggas are dumb!.....
and your bench?...doo-doo still.
OKC is still going to run your old ass team out of the gym.....

that site is wrong, they didn't even include westbrook's contract.

65 mil.
> >And they will be at 36 million after next season,
49 mil actually, as you can see above.

he'll be 28 in 2014 actually. and we'll have a gang of cap space in a loaded free agent class. lebron, wade, bosh, amare, melo, rudy gay can all opt out. dirk, granger, deng all free agents.

Listing a FA agent market that isn't even here yet..lol....you put down lebron and wade?..lol..possibly coming to the lakers?..lol
Delusional ...enjoy getting old as fuck and getting run over by youngins .
You remember the Ramon Sessions Deal ....Remember I told you guys you were stupid for getting him, and that he wouldn't be able to stop anyone, and that he was too small?
I said you guys would have been better off with CJ Watson....I know you remember
I know more about the destiny of your own team than you do...lol
chalk this one up as another fail for the lakers.

The Lakers would have lost with CJ Watson too. And the Lakers will always find a way to reload.

and I listed the potential free agent market to let you know who could be available for the Lakers to sign to help build around a 28 year old Dwight Howard in 2014 when we have a ton of cap space.

97530, I don't understand why they can't get this, man. The only player Posted by Bombastic, Sat Aug-11-12 03:54 PM
that might have given up his Bird Rights in this era is Lebron & even that ended up being a sign-and-trade.
They're the Lakers. They don't kowtow or appease players. If he wants to get paid the most on the best roster possible he's staying there.
And Bynum ain't going anywhere neither, that dude ain't turning down a free meal let alone leaving money on the table.
If the Sixers wanna keep him, they will. > >lol shit i'll call that bluff....that nigga aint going >NOWHERE.

97543, there's people here claimin the Nuggets are the big winners of this deal Posted by Bombastic, Sat Aug-18-12 03:44 PM
which is total bullshit when the Lakers just became the title favorite plus landed the best center in the league to bridge from Kobe to the next phase but it has been said.
To me I don't see anything that's going to really fundamentally change the outcome for them this year or in the forseeable future but I understand the trade from their perspective.
|
97544, The Nuggets basically traded Aaron Afflalo for Iggy, that's a huge upgrade... Posted by ThaTruth, Sat Aug-18-12 04:20 PM
Iggy's the "vet" on that team at age 28, outside of him and old man Miller basically everybody on that team coming back is under 25. The Nuggets should easily be a top 4 seem in the west for the foreseeable future.
|
97545, eh despite Bomb's anger, he's right. It's not going to make them anything Posted by El_essence, Sat Aug-18-12 04:35 PM
more than an entertaining team to watch run up and down the floor for a year or two. But "huge" upgrade is a bit much.
|
97546, Its not going to make them a contender next year but Iggy is a... Posted by ThaTruth, Sat Aug-18-12 06:36 PM
much better player than Afflalo on both ends and that team has plenty of room to grow.
This Laker team as constructed basically has a 2-year window and who knows what happens after that. Most likely we'll regroup and reload like normal but you never know.
|
97547, Iggy's only there for two years tho, Karl prolly the same Posted by Bombastic, Sat Aug-18-12 06:59 PM
Miller will be gone soon too.
Who is on this team to build around? Gallinari? McGee (who I like as far as price/upside but c'mon)?

97549, I heard Iggy talking about it but if the Nuggets have any brains Posted by Bombastic, Sat Aug-18-12 08:57 PM
they'll just give lip-service to that until at least after this season.
If they give Iggy a sizable re-up before this team even hits the floor, they've got a shot at actually losing this trade after all.
Iggy wants the check & still thinks he can be 'The Guy' but he's a #3/4 on a real contender.
He could have been money in Artest or Odom's spot in LA but you're a first-round exit if he's your best player.
|
97550, like I said, I'd have done the deal but it doesn't really make them Posted by Bombastic, Sat Aug-18-12 05:13 PM
a factor now or later.
Another 'tough out' first-round exit, *maybe* win a round & lose in the 2nd.
Basically the same trip they've been on for awhile.
The Lakers on the other hand got a Top 3 player in the game in his prime and the Sixers took a swing at having a real piece to build from.
So to me the Nuggs didn't 'win' amongst those four by any stretch, if people don't see from his Sixer years & from his Olympic play that Iggy is a perfect complimentary player but cannot be your best player if you wanna win, I don't know what to tell em.
|
97551, Ok I see what you're saying, the Nuggets definitely didn't come up... Posted by ThaTruth, Sat Aug-18-12 06:41 PM
as much as the Lakers or the Sixers, but for coming in at the tail end they were still able to add an All-Star/All-Defense-caliber player to their team without giving up a lot so it was definitely a win.
The overall winner may not really be determined for a while and will largely be based on how the health of the 2 centers works out.
|
97552, to me both Sixers & Lakers have already won in a sense Posted by Bombastic, Sat Aug-18-12 06:55 PM
The Sixers were gonna dump Iggy for Odumb's expiring last summer.
Even if Bynum fell apart they'll have moved on & shed salary like they'd wanted to anyway plus you get a chance to see what these kids can do.
From that alone it's already the best haul we've gotten when trading a 'star' in my lifetime as a Sixer fan (unless possibly you count Theo/McKie-for-Stack for a stretch).
As for the Lakers, it's the lynchpin to an incredible offseason while putting them back in the title chase plus having a future piece.
I can't really see how that fails there unless Dwight somehow crumples in a heap right after they give him the max deal.
Basically every team did well but Orlando but only two made what I'd consider 'power moves' with short/long-term upside.
|
97553, oh, i'm not saying that the nuggets 'won' this trade Posted by dula dibiasi, Sun Aug-19-12 12:28 PM
or that they're title contenders as constituted. i was speaking moreso to ujiri's overall performance, which given the circumstances he inherited has been phenomenal.
he was under pressure from day 1, being forced to trade a top 10 player less than 2 years ago and dealing from a position of relatively little leverage. that team could very very easily be in the exact same place orlando is now, instead they can field a top 8 that's as good as anyone in the conference outside of LA and OKC.
he couldn't have played out the melo drama any more perfectly, i really liked the nene deal (tho i'm not quite where dream's @ with it -- http://yhoo.it/NU7YWy -- i am a big fan of vale's Tremendous Upside Potential and think he's in line for a change-of-scenery style breakout season) and i thought the way he was able to insinuate himself last-minute into this duhwight thing and nab one of those moving parts to significantly upgrade his roster was a pretty slick gambit.
i don't regard 'contending' as the sole criterion in evaluating front-office executives. the fact is unless you're fortunate / lucky enough to draft or inherit a true franchise player (which is an increasingly rare species in today's league), or you're the lakers who can go out and poach one from another team whenever the need arises, you kinda just have to 'make do' in a sense. masai's doing just that, and he's doing it pretty damn well.
reminds me a little of dumars' stellar first few years in detroit (you know, before he lost his mind and gave ben gordon and charlie villanueva $90M to not start)
