you act like the names or nicknames we call people, especially family, can be appropriate outside of that circle or community.
if you refer to your mother as "mom" in public, can anyone else within earshot do the same without it being a problem for you?
if you call your wife or girlfriend "baby" "honey" "sexy" or any other petname in public, can anyone else within earshot do the same? no, and you know it.
