Gillian and her partner David Rawlings are making beautiful folk music. They are great live, one of the best shows I've seen in a while. I would start with "Time (the Revelator)", or "Revival", if you are going to pick up an album (which you should).

also, co-sign on Greg Brown. A hell of a song writer, A Live One is an absolute essential. The song Canned Goods is worth the price of the album alone.

I would also add anything by Tony Furtado, the early years of Tom Waits, and Bela Fleck's Bluegrass Sessions as my personal favorites of the genre.
