6437, Once I finish it I'm pretty certain I'll feel the same Posted by celery77, Thu Sep-22-05 12:38 PM
My real problem is that the game is sooo good that I'm afraid to reach the ending, so I've been intentionally dragging out the experience. I've kind of been planning just one weekend where I lock myself inside and do nothing but play this game. Hopefully it will happen soon.

>i'm playing Warrior Within right now.. it's not too bad, but >the beginning was fucking bullshit.
And I rented Warrior Within and stopped playing about an hour in. It just really sucked compared to the first one -- way too much emphasis on combat, which is *not* what made the game fun for me. The first one, though, is brilliant start to finish.

it picks up about 20% in.. if you haven't seen the Dahaka i'd suggest renting it again for the chase sequences. but the cutscenes are pretty awful too compared with the first one's.

The league was easily the best videogame experience for me since Mario 3. No gaming experieince compares to having a league online. Sure, you have to cuss folks to get games played, but at least we finished the thing. We owe it to one other to put it down on the next generation games when the time comes.

|
6482, You gonna tell me it was nothing but fun w/ these? Posted by celery77, Thu Sep-22-05 12:44 PM
>Ninja Gaiden (NES)
I mean, I love Ninja Gaiden and all, but the real pleasure of the game is getting past that one spot you've been stuck on for like 3 weeks, ready to throw your controller through a window and cussing up a storm. I can't see how that fits into the first post's suggestion about 'satisfying from beginning to end.' It's just satisfying in one giant rush (following hours of torture) that few other games can duplicate.
>GTA3-SanAndreas
And while I've had some of my fondest play experiences in GTA3, you can't tell me that there aren't spots that drag in those games. There are more than a few missions that are just chores that you complete to unlock something else. I distinctly remember car collecting for the dealership in VC as the point where I lost faith in the 'brilliance' of the series. It was a pathetic fetch quest, noticeably below 'brilliant' (but sill I did it to get those cool cars in the show room).
|
6483, Dont be mad at me because you suck Posted by MrMajor, Thu Sep-22-05 01:28 PM
Just kidding. Sure there were some hard parts in those games, but to ME they were still fun. How can a game with no challenge be fun?
|
6484, I love me some challenging games, but... Posted by celery77, Thu Sep-22-05 08:11 PM
sometimes I just want it to be easy so I can relax. Sometimes I just like firing up an RPG and levelling for a few hours b/c it helps me chill out. Or playing a really good platformer where you can just dick around -- like Mario Sunshine, Psychonauts, or Jak and Daxter. If I'm already stressed out, the last thing I want is a videogame adding to my blood pressure.
But yeah, there's definitely something to be said for challenging games, I just can't play them *all* the time.
|
6485, Ico Posted by celery77, Thu Sep-22-05 12:50 PM
I know it's quickly becoming a cliche among the hardcore gaming crowd, but that game was amazing. My only problem w/ it was that it ended. I could have played that game forever.
(And can I also pretentiously point out that I got that game the day it was released, rode my fucking bike like an hour to get to the store to get it, and enjoyed it all through the Christmas season while everyone was ignoring it and buying other games, long before it became this obnoxious cliche of artistic gaming? I loved this game long before it was hip to do so.)

I love how when you're under water and people are shooting at you, that not only do you see the bullets whiz through the water, BUT - you see the fluttery, disturbed water around the round as well.
Plus, you really feel as if Mofo's are after you - I'm never had my adrenaline pumping like that from a video game before.

if i'm to finish a game, it better have a dope-ass engaging story to keep me playing or it better be really short
i do see myself playing through indigo prophecy in its entirety. maybe even multiple times
also i did finish makai kingdom recently but that wasn't even motivated by the story. i just wanted to play with the secret characters that are a lot easier to get when you're playing through for the second time

that new one that's coming out at the end of the yr looks amazing too....2P split screen goddammit!! hopefully it'll live up to the hype

6511, the best two, though - Deus Ex and Civilisation 2 Posted by The Damaja, Thu Sep-22-05 09:32 PM
Civ 2 because, even when you don't win, you have fucking epic games that are basically like alternative world histories, you watch your empire rise and fall over the centuries. I once surrounded Karakorum for 2 years with sea bourne forces, taking the capitol of my fiercist enemies once it had weakened sufficiently (cut off it's supplies). Eventually they took it back, and with technology stolen from me, swept through asia and eastern europe, cutting off MY capitol (rome) from the remains of the empire, finally leaving me nothing but Great Britain, from which to launch my last ditch nuclear attack in a bid to win the space race, hence the game.
Or the time I took over the aztecs in one turn. Or the world war 2 scenerio which I played on into the coldwar era, disabling nuclear weapons in the program code and entering a BIG ASS world war 3 with the soviets. Stealth bombers hitting Moscow from hidden aircraft carriers, espionage units sent into the city to disable their air defence.
And Deus Ex. So fucking brilliant. I literally stopped playing videogames for 2 years after I played that, cause there was just no way anything could live up to those standards. I remember they order you to execute your brother, and i was like "fuck that" so I turned and shot the commanding officer in the face... and instead of saying "mission failed," it kept the brother in the game, and removed further scenes with the commanding officer. And then later they tried to arrest us in the brother's appartment, MiB style. Instead of running away I decided to stay and fight... when they eventually got enough hits on me, instead of dying and restarting the level, I woke up in the next level, prisoner, having survived death. And the twist about that prison... dopeness

6513, one time i blew my legs off... and still completed the mission! Posted by The Damaja, Sun Sep-25-05 06:32 PM
you see i had set a booby-trap... i just underestimated its explosiveness somewhat. this made things quite intense, since I wouldn't be able to run away if any more guards spotted me
you get to spend experience points and also robotically/cybernetically upgrade yourself. but you can't have everything. like i went for "silent run" and "speed run" and built up my melee strength so I could cover 50 yards in a second and samurai-sword my enemies, then carry their corpses back off into the shadows (no-necro)
i need to replay the game sometime and try the swimming upgrades and jumping upgrades and combat upgrades... so many platforms and underwater areas that i didn't try
yeah... you need to get this game
|
6514, How many hours did you play this a day? Posted by NinjaSnoop, Mon Sep-26-05 04:11 PM
I need to know how addictive this game is because it could possibly ruin my study habits.
|
6515, oh, it will completely draw you in Posted by The Damaja, Mon Sep-26-05 08:18 PM
i was getting home and going on it straight away. and it's a longish game. there's so many rooms/buildings i can recall, but I don't remember what level they were on. but also there's so much information in this game. there's little "datacubes" that tell you stuff about the various parties, which you don't have to read, but you feel like a detective and you have to piece together everything, turn over ever stone so to speak. it even had me looking up stuff on the internet
yeah, fit it in during a holiday or something, otherwise it will fuck up your exams. you'll be thinking about it even when you're not playing it. lol
i think it took me 2 weeks, a 3-4 hours each day
