78698, It's not very compelling, and not social, but I bet it scales like a mofo.

YouTube can't keep spending $1M/day or whatever on bandwidth.
78638, but what about all the copyright infringement issues?

Who owned Youtube prior to Google's acquisition???

I was under the impression TimeWarner owned the company...

Google is "bill gatesing in the place" -

Anybody feeling GMAIL?
78745, YouTube was privately owned with significant VC investments.

wasn't the first internet bubble less than 10 years ago?

and now people are seriously thinking $1.6 billion is OK to pay for a single website?

the internet culture is so fickle...youtube's hot now, but who knows in a couple months...no way in hell i would buy a website right now. but google's got the resources, i guess.
78749, I'm still scratchin my head trying to figure out WHY?

Where exactly is the money going to come from? AdSense ads around videos? Ads INSIDE videos? What?

If I should die...I'd tell Big they're still hearin' his songs
run into Pac ask him where we went wrong
tell him life is miserable when ya dealin' in the physical form
Is everything that's invisible gone?

I'm sure they're betting that video blogging will, over time, achieve the same sort of growth that text blogging has. If that happens, and they can position themselves as a market leader (which they just did), it will be a fantastic investment.

But yeah, as of tomorrow they bought a ridiculous amount of traffic for their ads (YouTube is the 10th most popular site in the world), a devoted user base, a powerful brand, and a tremendous amount of content.
78782, this merger is going to impact internet culture for the next 5 years...

myspace is next. my guess is its one step closer to get video conferencing on mobile phones for everyday people. i'm not much of a tech-head but it's exciting cuz youtube's based in san bruno and google's in mountain view. both are in the 650 where my head rests...
