i think the animation "clunkiness" matters more in mass effect since you spend a significant portion of the game (~50%? more?) watching these characters act at each other. the acting and animation in the original trilogy weren't perfect by any means but they were believable. ME:A's acting and characters come off as amateurish and approaching the uncanny valley, respectively

but maybe it's something you get used to over time and the high quality of the combat and writing offset the apparent low quality of the "interacting with people" part of the gameplay
