tl;dr: Bungie wants the proper sequel to feel like a whole new game. Your characters from the first game won't carry over.

My thoughts: I'm very okay with my character not coming over to the sequel which is kinda my main problem with the game. I feel way less of a connection to my character in Destiny than to Master Chief in Halo.
