People said the same thing about games like 'Gone Home'.
Gaming is diversifying in scope and style.
If you have a desire to "win" everything, and "beat" people, there are plenty of games for that.
Simply tapping into wonder an amazement is a faaaaar great gaming motivator for me.
Hell, even with GTA5, a game that I enjoyed: the exploration, finding new things out, exploring and seeing >>>> the story.
NMS will go down as one of the great games ever, and a huge leap forward for the genre in tapping into the wonder motivator for gaming.
It's breathtaking.
