288619, Surface Pro 2

Really enjoying the user experience. It has just about everything I'd want in a tablet/laptop. The digitizer is what pushes it over the top in terms of usability for me. People talk about why you'd choose this over a MacBook Air, well, a MacBook Air can't function as a tablet with an active digitizer. Other tablets don't pack the digitizer in combination with this much computing power.

Bought the type cover 2, pretty happy with that as well. I've read a few complaints about the touchpad but I don't really use the touchpad anymore. The digitizer or finger can step in for most common functions well enough. When I have used it I haven't had any complaints.

The handwriting recognition is pretty fantastic, as long as you don't mix numbers with letters too much. I was showing it to Mrs Seal and the Surface was recognising my handwriting better than she was.

They failed the first generation with the abysmal battery life, but I think they're onto something that's worth supporting. This is about as versatile as it gets right now IMO.

Having gone through the reviews for this and also watching the reviews of 'phablets' since the first Galaxy Note, it's dawned on me how ineffective a lot of review sites are out there.

I don't need to sit through a mini editorial in a review about how this doesn't work as a laptop or tablet (duh, it's neither) or a phablet is too big and you'll look ridiculous using it (I'm not thinking about how people perceive me when I'm making a phone call, thanks, and your inability to handle a phone doesn't mean I'm as inept).

I mean, all this talk about how the Surface doesn't work in your lap speaks more to the inability of reviewers to adapt to new technology than a flaw in the design. In making a decision about what's right for me an my needs, rather than the tastes of the reviewer, Amazon reviews are just as, if not more, helpful than the likes of The Verge (although sites like gsmarena and notebookcheck can be very thorough and helpful).

Anyway, if you've been curious about how this works in real life, feel free to ask any questions.
288640, any problems with heavy duty productivity work?
Posted by kayru99, Fri Jan-17-14 01:21 PM
for example txt intensive spreadsheets, search/queries and word, for example? how bad did it beat your wallet? Would you feel comfortable taking one as your sole computing device on a business trip?
288662, I've not done anything hugely intensive so far

I use spreadsheets that are pretty heavy on the macros for work and it's handled them with no problems. I would definitely feel comfortable taking it as the sole computing device on a business trip, that's exactly why I've bought it. I have this, a Galaxy Note 3, and an Acer W700 I bought last year, so I've gone all in with this. I don't even have a desktop at home.

Wallet wise it set me back about $$1,200USD, including the type cover 2.
288726, cool, Thanks!

Yes, if you're a fan of what Apple does and how it does it, this isn't going to draw you away from the fold. But there's no turning those people, who are not only too far locked into the eco-system to move, but if they found anything as good as Apple would probably turn their noses up at it and call it a copy.

Nevertheless, there are a lot of us who don't buy Apple products in general, and for those of us looking for something versatile, There's rarely been anything that gets so much right.

Still, there's every chance this goes the way of the Zune I guess. I'm just glad in this case I was able to get a hold of one before M$ gave up on it.

Like, whoa

And I'm an iPad owner THREE TIMES OVER

Not anymore

After this iPAD I'm done
289844, I just copped the RT 2 (or whatever the low-end one is), I'm loving it
Posted by celery77, Sat Apr-05-14 12:42 PM
The keyboard lets me type just as fast as I want, everything looks slick, swiping between apps and windows is easy as can be (once you get adjusted to Windows 8, I did have to google a few questions and watch some tutorial videos), the Microsoft Suite of Bing apps like news and sports are slicker than I ever would have expected, the connectivity with other devices (like the g/f's windows phone) is sleek, using things like the SkyDrive is as easy as setting up an MS account, so yeah -- I'm digging it. Even splitting windows (web browser big, twitter on the side) is smooth as can be.

so yeah -- I know iPads are nice and all that, but I can't imagine what they have over the Surface. This is everything I wanted out of a slick little gadget without having to pay the Steve Jobs tax.
289861, simple

apps
289863, So basically, people above 25 with jobs should get Surfaces
Posted by Orbit_Established, Sun Apr-06-14 07:22 AM

Because those dumbass applications that the iPAD has aren't
for actual busy people

Trust me, I've owned THREE iPads.
289874, Ehh, the argument for apps is pretty strong though.
Posted by kwez, Mon Apr-07-14 03:02 PM
I prefer the Surface easily, but I can get how certain popular apps being exclusive to the iPad could make it difficult to choose a Surface.
289878, honestly -- name one specific app that I'm missing out on
Posted by celery77, Tue Apr-08-14 12:17 AM
because things like easily switching between multiple users (between me and the g/f, that is a feature used DAILY) and being able to have two windows open on the same screen, I don't know what app is going to make those "small" things.
289885, apps?lol...SP2 allows you to use PROGRAMS..FULL programs
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Apr-08-14 03:18 PM
not some stripped down apps...
Carrying something the size of an iPad and being able to run a FULL version of something like Photoshop, Lightroom, AutoCAD, Revit, etc...shits all over any and every app available on iOS....
289895, literally everything you mentioned is available on ios...

ONLY ON OKP are people saying the ipad is not a device fit for productivity. ACTUALLY, you can do more on ios. If we're keeping it 100, Microsoft compares the surface to both ipad and macbook air. The S2 is an improvement and solid product. I'll let y'all cook but y'all wrong about the ipad comparisons laughably wrong at that.
289897, I OWN an iPAD dog...have owned SEVERAL.

Y'all said there's nothing that can't be done on a surface pro 2. That's laughable and proven wrong by facts. The Surface Pro 2 can't shoot 2K video. My ipads and two-year-old phone can do that.

In closing, apps are full programs.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA

U MAD and HURT.

Everything I posted is not possible on a Surface tablet TODAY. I'm talking about productivity ie getting stuff done.

MAN UP AND TAKE THE LOSS.
289919, Nigga...I have owned THREE iPADs. I am an expert, NOT YOU.

Don't know the last time the mainstream product was
THIS inferior to a competitor

i'm running premiere, after effects, photoshop, etc. daily, so i'd never be able to replace a laptop with a tablet. i use my tablet for pretty much purely entertainment. and i HATED using the "full programs" on the Surface because they're clearly not designed for 1) a smaller screen or 2) touch, which renders them frustrating at best.

the Win8 OS is well thought out for a touchscreen device, but considering a Surface to be a complete laptop replacement is a joke to me.

so then it comes down to apps and Microsoft's never gonna convince a significant number of mobile devs to switch to Windows, and therefore you're buying into an ecosystem that won't survive much longer.
289896, No, grownups like to be able to do actual work on a tablet
Posted by Orbit_Established, Wed Apr-09-14 08:36 AM

Not necessary run superpowered simulations of black holes,
but actually write an article or a memo

I have an iPAD and its almost completely worthless, even
with these bullshit keyboards

I've played with a surface several times, and its built for
the kind of low-medium level maintenance that actual busy
people are looking

i got giant ogre hands...i just found the Surface keyboard to be slightly better than the 3rd party apple joints, which is still way too cramped for any serious work.

i can't imagine writing long form on any tablet unless it was the only option.

Surfaces are nice devices...build quality is ok, OS is really good, but they're gonna continue to struggle with that developer problem

So that OS that you're talking about is full fledged Windows 8.1...not an offshoot....

You gotta differentiate between the Surface and the Surface Pro. THIS post is about the Surface PRO...not the regular Surface.
