The rendering won't adversely affect the life of the HDD, and frankly, you'd want to set up a backup for your files regardless of which drive they're on. Plus, the rendering will take up your CPU, so doing operations on a separate drive would still be inconvenient (unless you expect to be doing things with it on another machine a lot).
