235327, What headphones do you guys use?
Posted by Ketchums, Thu Jun-10-10 10:13 AM
Not really a dweller in High-Tech, but I thought it'd be cool to see what kind of headphones OKP was rockin' with their iPods or for their DJ gigs and shit. I just got these Miles Davis Tribute headphones by Monster, and I'm in love with them. But I'm still sorta craving an over-the-ear joint that sounds and looks dope.

Posted by ShinobiShaw, Mon Jun-14-10 07:27 PM
Just as a point of reference The default ipod/iphone earbuds will not stay in my ears unless I crazy glue them in there. They slip out, pop out. Forget using them at the gym unless I sit still and dont move they will fall out.

I have plenty of DJ style headphones and over the ear joints. I need a small pair for the gym and running. suggestions?

Should look something like this: http://assets.head-fi.org/6/6d/6d4c6e7a_IMG_3429.JPG

Can't wait.

Thinking of also getting either the Denon AH-D2000 or AKG K701 sometime soon.

For IEMs, I was able to the get TripleFi 10s, and they were a good buy for the Black Friday price ($95 and I got a $20 credit = $75). I guess the normal street price is around $300, and they've been going for $180 for the last couple of months since everyone is flipping the ones they got during Black Friday. The fit on these isn't that good and I had to get some Sony Hybrid tips, and they still don't fit that great, and the cable is pretty shitty. In terms of sound signature, they definitely have a V-type sound, with boosted bass and treble but recessed when it comes to mids, so I'm a little disappointed. I can see why people like these so much, however. I'm thinking of possibly selling them, but they are kind of a steal at the price, so I won't unless I can find some suitable replacements for around the same price. I'm currently looking at the HeadDirect RE0. If only Sennheiser would have their IE8 at the same price (I've only seen them at $400).
249101, glad someone in here finally has an amp.

headphones ain't shit without power to drive 'em. even in-ears should have something like a CMOY amp to drive 'em if you really want them to do what they're supposed to. here's a link to a good CMOY maker if you're interested: http://www.jdslabs.com/
249104, I think some IEMs have such low impedance that an amp
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Thu Jan-20-11 11:52 AM
wouldn't really be necessary, although I would say that an amp, even if the gain was minimal, would be better and couldn't possibly hurt (unless the amp is so strong that you get hissing on low impedance headphones).

My search for a DAC/AMP was insane and I can't believe how much research I had to do. It's really nice how much quality you can get nowadays in regards to DACs and AMPs for relatively budget prices. Chinese makers like Matrix are coming out with some nice DACs, amps, and combo units that are very good-looking that even rival the big names that cost several times more in terms of sound quality. And Schiit Audio has some gorgeous solid state and tube amps, and they have a beast combo unit coming out soon. My wallet is going to hate me when I get upgrade-itis.
249157, very true.
Posted by FortifiedLive, Thu Jan-20-11 09:15 PM
then again, i use my RS-2s even on the go lol. that cMoy does a decent enough job to drive them. not a big fan of IEs, but i use Klipsch S4s when i run. average sound, but the cMoy really livens it up. you should look into Little Dot. they make incredible amps at decent prices.
249273, I might pick one up. I thought about building one
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Sun Jan-23-11 09:03 AM
but I'm not sure how much money I'd save. It might be a fun project, but I could also see it being a pain if I screw up or if it just takes too much time.

I'm thinking of possibly selling my TF10s, however, as I can't get a good fit that I want even with the Sony Hybrid tips that everyone recommends. The best fit that I've had from IEMs are probably from the cheap Sennheiser CX300s that I've had a few times. I'm looking at the Klipsch S4 or the HeadDirect RE0 as possible replacements. I don't mind if they're a slight drop in SQ since I don't care too much for IEMs in the first place and prefer my full-sized setup.

Oh, I got the DAC/amp and they definitely drive my HD650 well.

If so, did you notice a big difference? Is it worth upgrading or should I just stick with the 595's and wait a little longer?
251235, I had the 555s a long time ago, so I can't make a fair comparison.

Although the 650s are definitely my favorite pair after testing out a a bunch of headphones (AH-D5000, AKG K701, SR325). The 595s are like $150 nowadays, so probably can't say they're like twice as better, but they are definitely better. The sound of the 650s are just lush. If you're going to buy, I'd recommend calling J&R and talking to their rep, because I got mine for $321.50, which is a lot less than most places are willing to sell it for.

I thought about getting the HD800 but I def didn't want the mrs killing me when she saw the price tag on those so I stayed with the HD650s and added the WooAudio 6 Amp.

EDIT: Just hooking things up today, so hopefully I'll be back later with some initial thoughts. This should be a nice upgrade from my HD595s which have served me well for a number of years.

Once you do it you won't care how much it cost. It's incredible and scales with every upgrade I throw at it.

I'm in the Woo boat as well. I have the Wa2 (otL) which is a better fit for the 800s than the Wa6 but the Wa6 is still good w/ the 800s I heard ever single Woo except for the Wa3 and the electrostat amp.

I checked these out in BB last time I was in there and they seem cool, but they're from Monster so I'm sure they're a rip off:

Especially trying to bid on a pair from eBay to save what, $50 vs the Beats?

After trying them again in Best Buy I just copped em. I had a gift certificate anyway, so they were around what the ATH-M50s cost on Amazon.

If I don't like em I'll take em back, but so far they're solid. Great bass and hella comfortable. Aside from the price I can't really see much of a downside.

I noticed you got the HD650s in the above post, but looking at the rankings on Head-fi it seems like the Audio Technicas you recommended are sitting a spot higher and are less than half the price at retail then you paid with a discount.

http://www.head-fi.org/products/category/over-ear

What's the benefit of the HD650s?
260954, rankings are all relative to price point.
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Wed Aug-31-11 07:42 PM
a Civic might be rated a 9/10 for what it is and is a great car, but it's not exactly a Benz that gets a 8/10.

I just used extremes for my example, and I think the discernable quality between 120 and 360 dollar headphones probably isn't worth it (diminishing returns). Moreover, something like the HD650 is going to require amplification, which tacks on additional costs. I just ordered some M50s yesterday and should be receiving them tomorrow. I'm actually thinking of selling my setup (NuForce HD, HD650, and K701) if I like the M50s enough. I like headphones, but I think I'm much more comfortable at the lower price points. I might end up going with the M50 as my sole headphones if they are good enough.

HD650s are open headphones so they do have really good soundstage (K701s are better in that regard, though), and the overall sound quality is great, but I find myself listening through speakers so often that it's hard to justify keeping my current setup (resell value of what I have is pretty damn good).
260994, I just received the M50s, btw.
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Thu Sep-01-11 07:05 PM
I'm enjoying them at the moment. They definitely clamp a bit more on my head than the Sennheisers, but the (p)leather pads are pretty comfortable. I'll have to give them a bit more time, but I'm definitely considering making these my main headphones.
261026, I'm leaning towards the M50s now
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Fri Sep-02-11 11:25 AM
but I'm wondering if I'll notice much of a difference with 192kbps AAC on my iPhone.

I pretty much only listen to music on the go, so I feel like a lot of what's talked about on the head-fi forums doesn't apply to me.
261136, I think 192 is fine most of the time.

People that tell you they can tell the difference between a 192kbps rip and a v0, 320, or lossless rip are usually full of shit unless they've done a true blind ABX test with enough trials to to claim they can discern (I mean in a statistically significant level) between the quality. With that said, most of my stuff is v0+ because that's just what I'm comfortable with.

The headphones are really good, and I'm going to definitely keep them. I don't think I'll be selling my HD650s, however, since I've been doing some comparisons and I prefer the Sennheisers for certain genres/tracks. If you primarily listen to hip hop or bassy electronic stuff, I'd say the M50s are a good bet. The bass is punchier, and the closed design gives that subwwoofer effect that you don't really get with the Sennheisers. The M50 reminds me of the Denon D2000s (physically and sound), except the M50s didn't have terrible sibilance issues for me, The Sennheisers are a bit better when it comes to the midrange, and a lot of the stuff I have with female vocals or stuff I expected to sound "lush" sound a bit better on the 650s. I'm pretty much just reaffirming what most people have said about the two headphones.

I've owned the following full headphones: SR60i, SR80i, ATH-AD700, ATH-M50s, HD 555, HD 650, AKG K701, Denon D2000, and Denon D5000s, and I'd say that the ATH-M50s are the best bang for the buck. The Grados are great at their price point ($80-100), but they're more suited primarily for rock, and the M50s are better all-rounders, although the HD555 is pretty solid too (but a bit boring sounding). I got them for 125 from ProAudioMart on eBay (an authorized Audio Technica reseller, so you get the warranty).

I love everything about the build of them, but the sound quality has been hit or miss so far. They sound great with bass heavy stuff but at the cost giving mediocre sound with other stuff.

Being able to pause and skip tracks from my iPhone with the little remote has been cool, but these are definitely going back.

I really wish I could have just had a reliable pair of ATH-EM7-GMs.

I still love them. My only gripe is that the build quality of the cord is less than stellar. The good news is that the cord is detachable. The bad news is that replacement cords are impossible to find.

Both genre-wise and in terms of format.

Because even with those Beats I could tell the audio quality of my 192 kbps AACs might not be up to snuff.

I do have the benefit of having 99% of my music collection on disc and wouldn't mind re-importing if necessary.

I've been wanting to upgrade for a long time and although I can't go all out like some of you here, I'd be cool with something in the 75-100 range.

But then I read reviews on some of the pairs mentioned in this thread and there's a decent amount of people (amazon reviews and OKP's) mentioning wires fraying, shorts, and other failings. Is this just what you have to accept nowadays?

I've actually had the same pair of headphones for about 12 years now, some $30 Koss joints. Ears pads are green and discolored from sweat, band is kept together with tape, BUT no shorts and still works fine. If I'm spending $100, I'm hoping for the same type of longevity, along with a decent bump in sound quality. Not happening?

I didn't realize this post was in existence. One is made like every other year or so.

Anyway, do not cop the ifrogz luxe. Shits are garbage, and the drivers are only 7mm, which means the bass quality is not there.

Also, the mic/track control switch does not work. DEAL BREAKER.

The Skullcandys are nice, but a lot of them do not come with a mic/track control switch, plus the cords are small in diameter and rip easily. ...The Skullcandy titans come with a fiber cord, but again no mic/ track control

Dr.dre beats earphones are 100.00, and of course they are high quality
and distribute sound evenly and effectively, but I am sure there are a lot of earphones on the market that are just as good, but less extravagant in price. ...

I have always wanted a nice pair but have been broke and never able to afford any. I bought a pair of Powerbeats by Monster in the airport, and I think they sound great and are comfortable.

Reading reviews, I am missing out on a whole lot though.

I'm looking for a, I don't even know the proper terminology, a closed ear headphone that sounds amazing but doesn't rape my wallet too much. I am checkin out all the posts in here of course, any other recommendations?

Bought these based on y'all, online reviews, and a sale. And really...I just got tired of looking, waiting, and thinking. I'm sure it is an upgrade over the in-ear skull candy joints I was rolling with for everything (work, gym, general chilling later on when the wife and kid are asleep and I'm not).

I'll come back after I get them, burn them in, and survey the sounds.

These things are awesome. I've enjoyed everything I've listened to more than before with these. They were great to me for the D'Angelo and Kendrick's new one. Good bass without overdoing it and I hear everything. It makes it clear how foul I was living before with my ride's audio situation too. I get to fly with them next month so I'll get another experience with them.

292925, BOSE QC25s & Bluetooth for working out running...
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Fri Oct-24-14 12:00 AM
I purchased Bose QC25's a few weeks ago, very happy with them and my thoughts are in the recent Bose thread.

I'm considering these Plnatronic Bluetooth headphones as i've just started running again. They seem the best of the bunch for bluetooth headphones for exercise. Maybe 2015 will bring some different models but these seem the high mark at the moment.

292939, Those Plantronics bluetooth
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Sat Oct-25-14 07:59 AM
I've tried them on and the sound is good considering its over bluetooth. The no wires is a real luxury and makes a lot of sense if you are into running or working out. The big downside is the strap connecting the two ear pieces is going to be loose for everyone. The next model they'll incorporate a way to tighten it to suit personal needs.

The Kliptsch ONE's have really clear, well-balanced sound at a good price - $100 retail and are found for less than 40 bucks on eBay.

The model is discontinued, but they are available around the net. Also are worthwhile if you have an Apple device. The cans have a microphone and volume control on the cable.

293563, Loving the Plantronics BackBeat Fit
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Sat Nov-22-14 11:56 AM
I'm glad I made this purchase and the BackBeat Fit are a complete luxury when exercising when you don't have to worry about any cord getting tangled or caught or coming loose. I had been on the fence for a month regarding whether to buy the Plantronics BackBeat Fit and instead bought some $10 Sony headphones which go around the shape of your ear and then putting the cord inside my kit when running. They worked well enough. However, I've just had a birthday and some surprise cash came my way so I purchased the blue BackBeat Fit which had been slightly reduced in price.

The sound quality is excellent and far better than any headphones I've been using in recent years (except my Bose noise cancelling). Clear and no drop outs. I use an arm band for my iPhone while using the BackBeat Fit.

Using these headphones while running has been a revelation and I know I'll also use them on the Concept 2 Rowing Machine and while lifting weights.

The downside for many people will be the loose fitting strap which goes behind the head. I thought this would be a major annoyance for me but when running i've not even noticed it. The strap would be loose and would bob on the back of the head for everyone. I don't consider it enough of a negative factor to stop me recommending the BackBeat Fit .

I've only had them for a couple of days so I haven't fully tested them out for battery life and other features like how easy it is to take calls with them on or switching tracks (i tend to exercise with a playlist already loaded). I did find myself still wearing them around the house after i had finished exercising which I hadn't thought I'd do.

In addition the pouch that comes as a holder for the headset can be inverted inside out and be used as an arm band and soft case that you can tuck and zip up your iPhone/handset in. However, it would be a little bulky yet its size would also allow you to put car keys/house keys etc... inside the case.

These headphones are going to make going to the gym and exercising more enjoyable. The luxury of not having a cord while working out can not be underestimated. Bluetooth FTW.

Does anyone have experience with wireless earbuds? Does the sound quality fall off significantly?
297966, several pair. the biggest issue with all of them is range.
Posted by FLUIDJ, Mon Nov-02-15 07:14 AM
Bluetooth range degrades when outdoors, so the phone needs to be reasonably close by to prevent dropped signal.

I've gotten the best performance from a bluetooth dongle that I can plug any set of wired headphones into. It's the Sony SB52.

I have a pair of MEElectronics wireless plugs too...AF7 I believe is the model number. They work very well too.

One key feature I look for is APT-X capability. Look into it...

298087, Picked up the Altec Lansing headphones
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Mon Nov-09-15 12:28 PM
They're not bad. The signal is strong. (I can walk about 20 feet away from my phone and still hear clear audio)

The headphones come with a headset control wand, so I can fast-forward / rewind and accept calls while moving around. It also has a feature which allows the headset to read text messages over the audio stream. I haven't tried the dictation system, but the dictation system when I use Cortland works well.

The sound quality of the headphones isn't great, which is a minor issue, but for 40 bucks, the headphones are a great deal.

302504, RE: Grado durability
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Wed Jul-12-17 08:35 PM
Hey,

Are Grado's durable? My plan is to carry this pair of Grado's in a messenger bag.

Would a pair of Grado SR-60's hold up to regular use?
302505, yes and no
Posted by zero, Wed Jul-12-17 09:15 PM
the bands and cups are pretty durable but I've had a lot of issues with the foam earpads fraying over time. they dry out and start to flake after a year or two of use. i replaced them and those started flaking, too. cant imagine they'd hold up well banging around in a bag.
302506, Okay
Posted by obsidianchrysalis, Thu Jul-13-17 01:05 AM
Then I'll stick with the Klipschs. My coding time usually happens at a coffee shop so the Grados would be getting lugged around often.

The Klipschs have a good sound and are fairly durable. My last pair lasted about three years, which is a while for me.
302566, Picked up the R6i

I'm listening right now and getting quality sound. They're obviously in the 'break-in' period but I'm digging the clarity of the highs and the fullness of the bass.

Just finished listening Blacker the Berry by Kendrick in MP3 and WAV form. My old headphones weren't clear enough to really tell a difference, but these are.

So far, so good.

306039, Who knows about IEMs?
Posted by L_O_Quent, Mon Jan-24-22 07:30 AM
Thought I'd resurrect this post since I just found out about IEMs and it seems they've exploded as of late. I'm looking to just get my feet wet to hear what the low end $30 and under sounds like because it's reviewed so well.

Thus far I'm leaning towards BLON BL-03 or KZ ZSN PRO X as my starter pair then mess around with upgrading tips and cables to get a feel of it.

Any suggestions are gladly welcomed.

306042, I have custom molded IEMs and a set of universal fits.
Posted by soulfunk, Mon Jan-24-22 02:02 PM
As a reference I'm coming from the perspective of a musician who uses IEMs on stage for live performances.

My custom molded pair are from 64 Audio, have 5 drivers in each earbud, but they cost over $1000. I absolutely LOVE them. My universal fit IEMs are from Westone (the UM Pro 20), and have dual drivers. They cost around $299. Those sound great as well.

On the lower end, some of the musicians I work with use Behringer IEMs which are essentially clones of much more expensive models from Westone or Shure.

In my experience, When it comes to IEMs the biggest factor isn't the number of drivers or frequency charts or whatever, but is how well they fit in your ear and how durable they are. That's the advantage of custom fitted IEMs. To that point a huge upgrade for any earbuds or IEMs is to get foam tips instead of the silicone tips that are typically included.

From a quick search online, you can get the Behringer SD251-CL for $35 which is a crazy deal for professional level IEMs. Those will likely be much more durable than the random Amazon IEMs, and in the same price range. (When I talk about durability - it's the cable and the connections at the end of the cable that are likely to break down over time.)

Here's a link (Sweetwater is like Amazon for musicians and sound engineers):

I had no reference point for all the videos and blogs I was reading only that the lower in IEMs were amazing. I will rock with these then and see how I like it plus it seems like there are more accessories to choose from with them as well. I'll grab some foam tips off the bat to see the difference.

Greatly appreciate the context and feel free to add anything you want here because I just see it as an exciting, yet inexpensive hobby to test taste (initially). At least I don't have to make a powerpoint for the wife lol.

fatiguing - they expand to fill the space in your ear (which is why they form such a good seal) so for some people that can feel like pressure when listening for a while. Really improves perceived bass response though.
